Mavericks Return to Taylor Center to Face Wildcats and # 9 Vikings

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team returns home this weekend for a pair of games at Taylor Center against Wayne State on Friday and #9 Augustana on Saturday. Tip-offs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m., respectively.

Minnesota State History: The 2021-22 season marks the 100th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,395-930 (.600) in 2,325 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 197-91 (.684) record to go with four regular-season championships and two tournament championships.

Against the Wildcats: Friday's game between Minnesota State and Wayne State marks their 35th all-time meeting with MSU leading the series 26-6. Earlier this season, the Wildcats defeated the Mavericks 79-68 at Wayne State.

Freshman Brady Williams led the Maverick offense with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman Kyreese Willingham recorded 150 points. Freshman Harrison Braudis added 140 points also.

Justin Eagins led the Wildcats with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Jordan Janssen recorded 19 points and nine rebounds. Alex Millender added 12 points also.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 24-4 record against the Wildcats, including an 11-2 record at Taylor Center.

Against the Vikings: Saturday's game between Minnesota State and Augustana marks their 115th all-time meeting with MSU leading the series 68-56. Augustana won their previous meeting in Sioux Falls 83-50 earlier this season.

Sophomore Quincy Anderson led the Mavericks with 13 points and six rebounds, while junior Devonte Thedford posted nine points

Tyler Riemersma led the Vikings with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Isaac Fink and Adam Dykman each tallied 12 points.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 27-18 record against the Vikings, including a 15-7 record at Taylor Center.

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State enters the weekend the owner of a 14-7 record, including a 7-7 NSIC record. This past weekend, MSU defeated St. Cloud State (87-80) and Sioux Falls (77-69) but fell to Southwest Minnesota State (81-71). All three games were on the road.

As a team, MSU is averaging 78.4 points and 37.7 rebounds per game while shooting 48.2% from the field. The Mavericks are also shooting 33.2% from three-point range and have passed out 231 assists and blocked 104 shots.

Sophomore Quincy Anderson is leading the Mavericks with 17.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game this season. Junior Devonte Thedford has tallied 11.2 points per game and is shooting 49.5% from the field. Freshman Brady Williams is averaging 12.7 points a game, while sophomore Malik Willingham has posted 9.9 points per game also.

The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 21st season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 434-194 (.691).

Concerning the Wildcats: Wayne State enters the weekend the owner of a 12-9 record, including a 9-6 NSIC record. Last weekend, WSC fell to Upper Iowa 79-63, before bouncing back with a 76-55 win against Winona State.

As a unit, WSC is averaging 71.4 points and 33.4 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 45.3% from the field and 34.1% from three point range. The Wildcats have passed out 212 assists and have posted 157 steals.

Justin Eagins leads the Wildcat offense with 16.1 points per game, while Jordan Janssen has tallied 15.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Nate Mohr has recorded 11.3 points per game also.

Wayne State is coached by Jeff Kaminsky who is in his sixth season with the Wildcats. He owns a career record of 530-451.

Concerning the Vikings: Augustana enters the weekend the owner of a 19-2 record, including a 13-2 NSIC record. The Vikings have won their last nine games, including a pair of wins over Winona State (64-60) and Upper Iowa (92-83) last weekend.

As a unit, AU is averaging 77.7 points and 37.0 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 47.4% from the field and 37.3% from three point range. The Vikings have passed out 356 assists and have tallied 132 steals.

Tyler Riemersma is leading the Vikings with 17.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game this season, while Isaac Fink has notched 15.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Adam Dykman as tallied 13.1 points per game also. 

Augustana is coached by Tom Billeter who is in his 18th season as head coach of the Vikings. He owns a 449-247 career record.
