Mankato, Minn. --- Senior winger
Reggie Lutz had a goal and an assist and became the school's career games played leader as #1-ranked Minnesota State downed Bemidji State 5-1 Friday in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action in Mankato.
With 164 games played Lutz surpasses
Bryce Gervais, who had 163 games played as a Maverick from 2012-16. Another current Minnesota State senior, defenseman
Jack McNeely, has also played in 163 games.
The host Mavericks scored twice in the opening 20 minutes tonight, outshooting the Beavers 9-6 in the process. Sophomore defenseman
Jake Livingstone wired a shot from the top of the left circle that beat
Gavin Enright high on the gloveside with the Mavericks on the power play at 11:44 of the opening period. The goal, which drew assists from
Benton Maass and
Ryan Sandelin is the ninth of the year for Livingstone. Then, at 18:32, Sandelin found a streaking
Reggie Lutz, whose shot beat Enright on the blocker side to make it a 2-0 Minnesota State lead.
Junior winger
Cade Borchardt got his 13
th goal of the year on the power play at 12:47 of the second period when he backhanded a loose puck from in front of the net past Enright.
Julian Napravnik connected with
Wyatt Aamodt with a back door pass and the senior defenseman connected for his fifth goal of the season at 14:47 to make it 4-0 Minnesota State after two periods of action.
Owen Sillinger scored on a shot from the high slot after finding the puck on a rebound at 6:57 of the third period to get the Beavers on the board. Sophomore center
David Silye cashed in for his sixth goal of the season when he jammed the puck past Enright at 10:53 in making it a 5-1 Maverick lead and that closed out the scoring in the contest.
Dryden McKay, who stopped 21 shots in the game, now stands 28-4-0 for 2021-22.
Senior defenseman
Benton Maass and
Ryan Sandelin both had a pair of assists in the game.
The win is also the 1,000
th in the history of the Minnesota State men's hockey program. The Mavericks are the 28
th program in NCAA Division I men's hockey to reach the plateau.
The Mavericks (28-5-0, 20-3-0 CCHA), who have extended their current winning streak to eight games, and the Beavers (14-17-0, 12-11-0 CCHA) close out the two-game league series Saturday with a 6:07 p.m. face-off scheduled.
