Minnesota State Travels East to Dance with LIU

12/14/2022 3:50:00 PM

Due Up:
Minnesota State travels to East Meadow, N.Y. for the first time in program history. The Long Island University Sharks find themselves at the top of the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) with a 10-1-1 conference record and an 11-6-1 overall record..

Last Time Out:
MMinnesota State got outlasted by Wisconsin as the Mavericks held close with a 3-2 goal deferential in the first periods over the weekend while surrendering a 7-1 goal margin in the second and third periods.

Head coach John Harrington went back to his duo in net as Lauren Barbro started off the weekend against Wisconsin while Alexa Berg took Saturday.

In Friday's contest, the Badgers jumped out the early lead just 21 seconds into the game causing the Mavericks to work the period from behind. Charlotte Akervik helped answer back as she put one on the tape for Alexis Paddington who did not miss her opportunity. The Badgers took exception as they go on to win, 5-2.

In a similar fashion, Wisconsin jumped out too early in Saturday's contest, Minnesota State was gifted an early power-play allowing for Brooke Bryant and crew to go to work in the offensive zone. A sharp pass by Bryant set up a Madison Mashuga slap-shot that ripped by the Wisconsin goaltender to even things at one.

The Badged regrouped in the second intermission, determined to steal back the momentum. UW ripped off four unanswered goals to take Friday's contest, 5-2.

Taking on LIU:
Minnesota State looks to capture its first win against the sharks in the first matchup with LIU in program history.

Long Island slots in on top of the NEWHA with a 10-1-1 conference record and an 11-6-1 overall record. The Shark's offense is led by senior Carrigan Umpherville who has accumulated nine goals and 14 assists on the year.

In goal, LIU leans on sophomore Tindra Holm who has started 16 of the 17 games played this season accumulating 923 minutes in net this season. Holm owns a minuscule 1.88 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage.
