Women's Hockey | Mavericks Drop 5-1 Decision to #2 Wisconsin Saturday

Box Score     Mankato, Minn.  --- Second-ranked Wisconsin scored four unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 win over Minnesota State in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association matchup Saturday at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in downtown Mankato.
 
The host Mavericks stood tied 1-1 with the Badgers midway through the opening stanza, but Wisconsin scored near the end of the period to regain the lead. At 4:16 forward Britta Curl deflected a shot from Caroline Harvey past Minnesota State netminder Alexa Berg for the game's first goal.  Junior winger Madison Mashuga's rocket from the top of the right circle beat Badger goaltender Cami Kornish at 14:28, with her third goal of the season knotting the score at 1-1.  Curl got her second goal of the period with a wrist shot from the slot at 17:37.
 
Center Casey O'Brien gave Wisconsin a 3-1 lead when she beat Berg with a wrist shot high on the stickside at 3:04 of the second. Left all alone on the left side of the slot, Laila Edwards scored her fifth goal of the year at 17:37 and at the end of 40 minutes of action, the score stood 4-1.
 
Sophie Shirley jammed the puck into the net for a power play marker at 13:29 of the third period to close out scoring in the game.
 
The Badgers, who upped their record to 15-2-1 overall, 12-1-1 WCHA, owned a 39-13 advantage in shots on goal in the contest. 
 
The Mavericks stand 7-10-0, 5-10-0 WCHA with this afternoon's result.
 
Next action for the Mavericks is a pair of nonconference games at Long Island University Dec. 16 and 17.
