Houghton, Mich. --- In a battle between two top-20 teams, Minnesota State and Michigan Tech battled to a 2-2 overtime tie in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action in Houghton, Mich., Saturday.
Now 8-5-1 for the season with tonight's result, #10 Minnesota State stands 5-2-1 in CCHA games.
The shots were even (9-9) through the first 20 minutes of action, but 20
th-rated Tech took a 1-0 lead when
David Jankowski collected a rebound on the right of the crease before sliding the puck past
Keenan Rancier at 14:48.
The Huskies outshot the Mavericks 11-9 through a scoreless second period.
David Silye scored a four-on-four goal when he pounced on a rebound to beat
Blake Pietila stickside for his 11
th goal of the year at 8:34 of the third to make it a 1-1 game. Tech went ahead for the second time in the game when
Tristan Ashbrook wired one high shortside at 11:48. Then, with time winding down and Rancier on the bench for an extra attacker, senior forward
Ryan Sandelin sent the game into overtime with a power play goal at 19:20. The goal is Sandelin's fifth of the year.
Neither team was able to score in overtime, officially ending the game in a 2-2 tie.
Silye and
Christian Fitzgerald both scored in the shootout and Rancier stopped three-of-four Tech shots as the Mavericks claimed the extra CCHA point.
Rancier, who was credited with 27 saves, stands 4-4-1 on the year with tonight's tie.
The Mavericks continue CCHA action next Friday and Saturday with Ferris State visiting Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in downtown Mankato for a pair of games.
