Mavericks Open Home Schedule Against Golden Bears and Vikings

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team opens its home and NSIC schedules this week as it takes on Concordia-St. Paul and Bethany Lutheran College at Taylor Center.

The Mavericks take on the Golden Bears on Tuesday, at 5:30 p.m., before taking on the Vikings at 1:00 p.m.
  
Minnesota State History: The 2022-23 season marks the 101st campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,402-933 (.600) in 2,335 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 199-93 (.681) record to go with four regular-season championships and two tournament championships.

Against the Golden Bears: Tuesday's game between Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul marks their 40th all-time meeting with MSU leading the series 32-7. The Mavericks have won their last 16 outings against the Golden Bears, including a 92-82 win in their most recent meeting last season.

Sophomore Brady Williams notched 16 points, while senior Kelby Kramer tallied 16 points and nine rebounds. Junior Kyreese Willingham added 13 points and four rebounds also.

Jacob Everson notched 10 points and three assists for the Golden Bears, while Reid Patterson added 10 points.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 31-5 record against Concordia-St. Paul, including a 15-2 record at Taylor Center.

Against the Vikings: Saturday's game between Minnesota State and Bethany Lutheran College marks their seventh meeting, with the Mavericks owning a 6-0 record. MSU won its last meeting vs. BLC 97-66 last season.

Sophomore Harrison Braudis tallied 15 points and three rebounds, while sophomore Brady Williams notched 11 points. Senior Kelby Kramer hauled in 10 rebounds also.

Hunter Nielsen led the Viking with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Justin Schrupp tallied nine points.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 6-0 record against Bethany Lutheran College.

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State enters the week the owner of a 5-0 record as it defeated St. Cloud State (86-68), Sonoma State (88-63) and Stanislaus State (80-76) last week.

As a team, MSU is averaging 85.0 points and 39.4 rebounds per game while shooting 51.8% from the field. The Mavericks are shooting 41.1% from three-point range and have passed out 70 assists and blocked 23 shots.

Junior Malik Willingham is averaging 20.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game this season. Sophomore Kyreese Willingham has tallied 13.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game also, while sophomore Harrison Braudis has notched 13.0 points a game. Sophomore Brady Williams is averaging 11.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game as well.

The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 22nd season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 441-197 (.691).

Concerning the Golden Bears: Concordia-St. Paul enters the week the owner of 1-3 record, including a 77-76 win over Bemidji State and a 90-86 loss in overtime to Northern Michigan.

As a unit, CSP is averaging 80.3 points and 26.3 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 47.0% from the field. The Golden Bears are also shooting 38.4% from three point range and have passed out 52 assists and recorded 25 steals.

Antwan Kimmons leads CSP with 25.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Marcus Skeete has tallied 16.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game as well, while Jacob Everson has tallied 8.3 points and 4.5 rebounds a game.

Concordia-St. Paul is coached by Matt Fletcher who is in his third season as head coach of the Golden Bears. He owns an overall record of 81-74.

Concerning the Vikings: Bethany Lutheran College enters the week the owner of a 4-0 record, including wins over Moody Bible (101-41) and Fontbonne University (95-81) in Chicago.

As a team, the Vikings are averaging 97.0 points and 43.5 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 49.8% from the field and 37.3% from three point range. BLC has passed out 91 assists, but has committed 45 turnovers.

Hunter Nielsen is averaging 20.0 points and 8.5 rebounds a game this season, while Drew Sagedahl has posted 17.3 points and 3.3 rebounds a game. Jax Madson has tallied 15.3 points per game and has connected on 12 three pointers.

Pat Garvin is in his third season as head coach at Bethany Lutheran College. He owns a 24-16 record.

Concerning the Warriors: Stanislaus State enters the week the owner of a 1-1 record, including a loss to Point Loma (73-62) and a win against Fresno Pacific (65-57) last weekend.

As a team, Stanislaus State is averaging 63.5 points and 29.0 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 41.9% from the field and 23.4% from three point range. The Warriors have recorded 26 steals and 28 assists as well.

Kobe Ordonio is averaging 18.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, while Marlon Short has posted 13.0 points and 4.5 rebounds a game. 

The Warriors are coached by Paul Trevor who is in his sixth season at Stanislaus State. He owns a 55-33 record.
