Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State scored a goal in each period en route to a 3-1 win over St. Thomas in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association matchup Saturday afternoon at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in downtown Mankato.
The host Mavericks, who owned an 8-4 shots on goal advantage in the first period, jumped out a quick 1-0 lead on a goal from
Taylor Otremba at 4:09. Otremba collected the puck on the far boards, beat a defenseman on a nice move and deposited the puck into the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Junior forward
Jamie Nelson grabbed a loose puck at the top of the crease and scored on a backhander at 14:01 of the second period. The goal, the fourth of the season for Nelson, gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead at the end of 40 minutes of play.
Sophomore defenseman
Shelbi Guttormson wired a shot that beat
Saskia Maurer high on the gloveside at 0:59 of the third period. Guttormson's second goal of the season made it a 3-0 Minnesota State lead. St. Thomas made it a two-goal deficit at 5:56 of the third on a wrist shot from the slot off the stick of
Maija Almich to close out the scoring.
The Mavericks owned a 30-24 advantage in shots on goal in the contest. Junior
Lauren Barbro made 35 saves for Minnesota State in the contest and upped her record to 3-5-0 with today's victory.
The Mavericks (6-7-0 overall, 4-7-0 WCHA) and the Tommies (3-10-0, 0-9-0 WCHA) close out the two-game league series tomorrow in Mendota Heights, Minn.
