Men's Hockey | Sandelin's Third-Period Goal Lifts Mavericks Past Gophers

Minneapolis, Minn.  --- Senior forward Ryan Sandelin's goal late in the third period broke a 2-2 tie and lifted Minnesota State to a 3-2 win over second-ranked Minnesota Saturday at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in downtown Mankato.

The Mavericks found themselves trailing 1-0 at the end of the first period, but rebounded to tie the game in the second before outscoring the visiting Gopher 2-1 in the third to claim the win.

Minnesota freshman forward Jimmy Snuggerud connected on a shot from the left circle that beat Maverick netminder Keenan Rancier high shortside at 15:31 of the first for the game's first goal.

Maverick freshman defenseman Campbell Cichosz's shot along the ice from the point found the back of the net at 14:38 of the second period with his first career goal knotting the score at 1-1.

Minnesota State broke the tie at 4:17 of the third when junior forward Josh Groll scored his first goal of the year and the goal gave Minnesota State its first lead of the game. The Gophers responded a short time later on a Mason Nevers tally at 5:18, but senior forward Ryan Sandelin took a feed from Sam Morton and wired a shot past close at 13:57 to close out the scoring in the game.  The goal, Sandelin's first of the season, is the sixth game-winning goal of his career.

Rancier, who was making his third career start tonight, finished with 25 saves and picked up his first career win with tonight's victory.

The loss is the first of the season for Minnesota and puts them at 3-1-0 for the year.

The Mavericks, now 1-1-0 for the season, continue nonconference action next weekend with Minnesota Duluth visiting for a pair of games.
