Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State fell behind, but responded with three straight goals in downing St. Thomas 3-1 Thursday at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in downtown Mankato.
The win is the first of the season for the Mavericks.
St. Thomas was first on the board on a
Gabby Billing's goal at 13:11 of the opening stanza. The Mavericks responded less than three minutes later to even the score at 16:07 with a power play marker from
Kennedy Bobyck, who took a pass from
Jamie Nelson while stationed in the slot and beat
Alexa Dobchuk with a shot between the pads.
Minnesota State took its first lead at 1:40 of the second when sophomore defenseman
Shelbi Guttormson tallied her first goal of the season with an even-strength tally and at the end of two periods of play, the Mavericks held a 2-1 lead.
The host Mavericks built a two-goal cushion when 14:56 of the third period when
Kianna Roeske pounced on a rebound to score her first career goal.
MSU owned a 36-11 advantage in shots on goal in the contest. Senior
Alexa Berg stopped 10 shots in earning her first victory with Minnesota State.
The Mavericks, now 1-6-0 overall and 1-6-0 WCHA for the season, and the Tommies (1-4-0, 0-3-0 WCHA) play again tomorrow with a 6:00 p.m. contest in St. Paul scheduled.
