Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- Second-ranked Minnesota jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead en route to an 11-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win over Minnesota State Friday at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in downtown Mankato.
Grace Zumwinkle converted on a power play chance at 6:43 of the opening period when she ripped a shot from the right circle that beat Maverick junior netminder
Lauren Barbro on the far side. It became a 2-0 lead for the Gophers less than three minutes later when
Catie Skaja tapped in a rebound for a power play marker at 9:06. Minnesota got a late tally at 19:34 from Zumwinkle to enter the locker room at the end of the period owning a 3-0 lead.
Savannah Norcross found a loose puck at the side of the crease and her goal at 4:54 of the second made it a 4-0 Minnesota lead. Zumwinkle scored her third goal of the game at 11:34 and
Nelli Laitinen added another 11:46 in making it a 6-0 advantage.
The Gophers added five third-period goals to round out the scoring in the game with
Abbey Murphy (power play goal at 2:37),
Taylor Heise (6:11),
Peyton Hemp (9:08),
Madison Kaiser (13:07) and
Elia Huber (16:24) all finding the back of the net.
The Gophers owned a 60-17 advantage in shots on goal in the contest.
The Mavericks, now 0-5-0 for the season, and the Gophers (3-0-0) play again tomorrow with an afternoon contest in Minneapolis scheduled.
