Mavericks to Take on Huskies, Mustangs and Cougars on Road this Week

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team continues its season with three road games this week. The Mavericks will head to St. Cloud State on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m., nonconference game, before taking on Southwest Minnesota State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. MSU will finish the week with a 5:30 p.m., game at Sioux Falls on Saturday.

Minnesota State History: The 2021-22 season marks the 100th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,393-929 (.599) in 2,322 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 196-90 (.685) record to go with four regular-season championships and two tournament championships.

Against the Huskies: Tuesday's game between Minnesota State and St. Cloud State will be their 194th meeting, with SCSU leading the all-time series 92-91. The Mavericks have won their last three games against the Huskies, including an 84-69 nonconference win at Taylor Center earlier this season.

Four Mavericks netted at least 10 points in their win over the Huskies earlier this season, including junior Kelby Kramer who notched a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Devonte Thedford and sophomore Quincy Anderson each tallied 15 points also, with Thedford passing out five assists and Anderson hauling in seven rebounds.

Caleb Donaldson paced St. Cloud State with 29 points, while Anthony Roberts tallied 17 points and three steals.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 22-18 record against SCSU, including an 8-9 record on the road.

Against the Mustangs: Friday's game between Minnesota State and Southwest Minnesota State marks their 67th all-time meeting with MSU leading the series 48-18. The Mustangs won their previous meeting 71-69 in overtime earlier this season at Taylor Center.

Sophomore Malik Willingham led the Mavericks with 15 points, while junior Devonte Thedford added 11 points. Freshman Brady Williams tallied a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds also.

Jake Phipps led the Mustangs with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Cliff McCray tallied 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 27-12 record against the Mustangs, including a 10-6 record on the road.

Against the Cougars: Saturday's game between Minnesota State and Sioux Falls marks their 28th all-time meeting with MSU leading the series 20-7. The Mavericks won their previous meeting 81-63 at Taylor Center earlier this season.

Sophomore Quincy Anderson led the Mavericks with 25 points against USF, while junior Devonte Thedford notched 20 points.

Will Kondrat led USF with 14 points and six rebounds, while Marko Coudreau tallied 13 points.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 17-6 record against the Cougars, including a 6-3 record on the road.

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State enters the week the owner of a 12-6 record, including a 6-6 NSIC record. This past weekend, MSU defeated MSU Moorhead (74-68) and Northern State (75-68) at Taylor Center.

As a team, MSU is averaging 78.4 points and 37.6 rebounds per game while shooting 48.3% from the field. The Mavericks are also shooting 32.5% from three-point range and have passed out 194 assists and blocked 89 shots.

Sophomore Quincy Anderson is leading the Mavericks with 16.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season. Junior Devonte Thedford has tallied 12.6 points per game and is shooting 51.9% from the field. Freshman Brady Williams is averaging 12.7 points a game, while sophomore Malik Willingham has posted 9.3 points per game also.

The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 21st season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 432-193 (.691).

Concerning the Huskies: St. Cloud State enters the weekend the owner of a 9-11 record, including a 5-8 NSIC record. Last weekend at home, SCSU bested Sioux Falls 72-63, before falling to Southwest Minnesota State 93-86 in double overtime.

As a unit, SCSU is averaging 80.0 points and 33.6 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 46.8% from the field and 31.8% from three point range. The Huskies have passed out 242 assists and have posted 113 steals.

Anthony Roberts has tallied 20.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game this season, while Caleb Donaldson has notched 17.6 points and 3.2 assists a game. Matthew Willert has posted 13.0 points per game also. 

St. Cloud State is coached by Matt Reimer who is in his eighth season with the Huskies. He owns a 126-93 record.

Concerning the Mustangs: Southwest Minnesota State enters the weekend the owner of an 11-8 record, including a 7-7 NSIC record. Last weekend on the road, SMSU fell to Minnesota Duluth 91-62, before besting St. Cloud State 93-86 in double overtime.

As a unit, SMSU is averaging 71.9 points and 36.9 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 46.5% from the field and 35.7% from three point range. The Mustangs have passed out 249 assists and have tallied 124 steals.

Kenny Byers is averaging 14.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game this season, while Jake phipps has posted 13.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Dunwa Omot has tallied 10.6 points per game also.

Southwest Minnesota State is coached by Brad Bigler who is in his 13th season as head coach of the Mustangs. He owns a 201-161 record.

Concerning the Cougars: Sioux Falls enters the weekend the owner of a 10-9 record, including a 6-7 NSIC record. Last weekend on the road, the Cougars fell to St. Cloud State (72-63) and Minnesota Duluth (98-64).

As a team, USF is averaging 72.7 points and 36.6 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 41.4% from the field and 33.0% from the behind three point line. The Cougars have also tallied 235 assists and have recorded 92 steals.

Matt Cartwright has tallied 18.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game this season, while Jack Thompson has tallied 13.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Chase Grinde has notched 11.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game also.

USF is coached  is coached by Chris Johnson, who is in his 15th season with the Cougars. He owns a 250-180 record.
