Mavericks Hit The Road Again As They Continue NSIC Play

Mankato, Minn. ---The Minnesota State volleyball team (8-5) will return be back on the road for the second consecutive weekend as they move forward in NSIC competition. Friday the Mavericks as they travel to Duluth, Minn. to take on the #22 Bulldogs with first serve at 6:00 p.m., Then, Saturday the Mavericks continue the road swing as they head to #16 St. Cloud State to battle the Huskies with first serve slated for 2:00 p.m.

Mavericks at a Glance: The Mavericks are coming off the first  weekend of NSIC competition where they went 2-0. Junior Mariah Edgington led the team with 21 kills (3.50 K/S). Senior Dana Schindler led the team with 38 assists. Senior defensive specialist and libero Mara Quam led the Mavericks with 36 digs on the weekend. Freshman Kiya Durant led the team with 6 blocks on the weekend.-

Impact Mavericks: Minnesota State is led on defense by senior defensive specialist Mara Quam who has recorded 246 digs (4.82/s) on the season. Quam is currently 2nd all time in career digs with 1,667 at Minnesota State. Junior outside hitter Mariah Edgington leads the way in kills with 142 (2.96/s) this past weekend.  Freshman middle blocker Kiya Durant has recorded 56.0 blocks (1.27/s)

Looking Back: The Mavericks recorded an 1-2 record this past weekend in their second round of action this year in the NSIC.

By the Numbers: This past weekend the Mavericks recorded 115 kills (11.5/s). Additionally, Minnesota State  added 103 assists (10.30/s) and 172 digs (17.20/s). 

Minnesota State History: The 2021 season marks the 53rd season in Minnesota State volleyball history dating back to 1968. Over that span the Mavericks have compiled an all-time record of 849-669-8 (.556).

Walking the Sidelines: Head coach Corey Phelps enters his first official season after serving as the interim head coach in 2019 and 2020. In 2019 coach Phelps posted a 19-12 record. So far in 2021 coach Phelps has earned a 8-5 record.

Scouting #22 Minnesota Duluth: Minnesota Duluth is located in Duluth, Minn.,  and is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The Bulldogs are 9-4 in 2021 with an 2-3 conference record. Minnesota Duluth is coached by Jim Boos who is in his 20th year with the team.

As a team in 2021, Minnesota Duluth has averaged 13.1 kills per set compared to its opponents 11.2. Additionally, the Bulldogs average 12.4 assists per set and 15.4 digs per set. 

Minnesota Duluth is led on offense by Cianna Selbitschka who has recorded 210 kills so far in 2021-22 season. Madison Gordon is the primary setter for the team and has 528 assists. Sydney Lanoue leads the Bulldogs on defense with 219 digs on the 2021-22 season. 

Scouting #16 St. Cloud State:  St. Cloud State is located in St. Cloud, Minn., and is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The Wolves are 10-3 with an 5-0 conference record on the 2021-22 season. St. Could State is led by head coach Chad Braegelmann who is currently in his sixth year with the team.

As a team in the 2021-22 season, the Huskies average 13.9 kills per set while their opponents notched 12.2. St. Cloud State has also averaged 13.1 assists per set and 14.6 digs per set. 

Kenzie Foley leads the Huskies offense with 174 kills on the 2021-22 season. Maddy Trove is the primary setter for St. Cloud State having recorded 543 assists. Kenzie Foley has 139 digs so far in the 2021-22 season.

Looking Ahead: Minnesota State will return to action when they have a weekend home stand as they take on Minnesota Crookston Friday, October 8th with first serve at 6:00 p.m., Then, the Mavericks square off against St. Cloud State Saturday, October 9th with first serve slated for 2:00 p.m.
