Mavericks Tame Dragons In NSIC Competition

The Minnesota State volleyball team (8-5, 3-2 NSIC) continued their weekend travels as they took on the MSU Moorhead volleyball team (1-12, 1-4 NSIC) in Moorhead, Minn. this afternoon. The Mavericks defeated the Dragons in straights sets 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-14). 

The Mavericks started the first set sluggish and quickly found themselves in an 8-2 hole. The Mavericks were struggling to keep pace but, worked the score to 18-12. From there, the Mavericks went on a blazing 9-0 run and took a three-point advantage with a score of 21-18. The Dragons were not going to go quietly. The Dragons answered with a 3-0 run of their own and knotted the set up at 21. The Mavericks proceeded to take the next four points and secure victory in set one. 

The second set saw a better start by the Mavericks but, were not able to create separation early as it was a back-and-forth tilt. The Mavericks got to an 11-8 advantage right before they went on a 3-0 run to push the lead to 14-8. The Mavericks remained ahead by a score of 16-11. The Mavericks proceeded to go on a 6-0 run to separate themselves from the Dragons by 11. The Dragons would roar back facing set point and go on a 6-0 run of their own but, the Mavericks withstood the heat and took set two 25-21. 

The Mavericks exerted their dominance in set three as they jumped up quickly on the Dragons to a 15-8 lead. The Dragons would put the heat on once again and get within three with a score of 17-14. The Mavericks were not going to let this one slither away as they went on an 8-0 run to conquer the set and Dragons in the match. 

The Mavericks were led on offense by junior Mariah Edgington with 11 kills on the contest. Senior Dana Schindler contributed to the offensive effort with 22 assists this afternoon. Freshman Abigail Wolfe had 5 blocks in the effort. Senior Mara Quam added 19 digs to her all time total in the match against the Dragons. 

The Mavericks return to action and will continue their road swing as they take on #19 Minnesota Duluth Friday October, 19th in Duluth Minn. with first serve at 6:00 p.m., Then, the Mavericks finish the road trip as they travel to #20 St. Cloud State Saturday October, 2nd in St. Cloud, Minn. with first serve slated for 2:00 p.m.
