Mavericks Fall to #11 Winona State in NSIC Action

The Minnesota State volleyball team (7-4, 2-1 NSIC) hosted #11 ranked Winona State volleyball team (10-1, 2-1 NSIC) Tuesday evening at Taylor Center. The Mavericks were defeated by the Warriors 3-0 (17-25, 14-25, 25-19).

The Mavericks fought hard to start the match as it was an even tilt for the majority of set one. They fought hard to keep up with the Warriors vicious attack and got within two half way through the set, at a score of 12-10. From there, the Warriors extended their lead to 15-10 after a 3-0 run. The Mavericks would get back to within four but, the Warriors took five of the final six points to seal the set one win 25-17.

In set two, the Mavericks kept it close early as the first eight points were back and forth as the score was 4-4. Then, the Warriors went on a 7-1 run to open up the margin to six with a score of 11-5. The Mavericks wouldn't get any closer than that in the set as the Warriors led by as much as 10 with set point to follow. The Warriors would close the set and win 25-14.

In set three, the Mavericks kept pace early but, eventually ran out of steam. The Mavericks trailed the Warriors 5-4 before the Warriors went on another big 6-0 run to extend the lead to 11-4. The Mavericks would keep fighting as they were able to get within four late but, the Warriors proved to be too much as they took set three 25-19 and the match.

Junior Mariah Edgington led the Mavericks in kills with 10. Freshman Brooke Bolwerk added 12 assists to the effort. Senior Mara Quam had 11 digs this evening. With the 11 digs, that moves Quam into second place in Minnesota State volleyball history with 1,630 digs all time.

The Mavericks return to action this weekend as they hit the road to take on Northern State Friday, September 24th in Aberdeen, S.D. with first serve at 6:00 p.m., Then the Mavericks head to MSU Moorhead in Moorhead, Minn. as they take on the Dragons with first serve at 3:30 p.m.
