#3 Mavericks Upended by #20 Bulldogs on Road

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. --- The #3 Minnesota State football team fell to #20 Minnesota Duluth Saturday evening on the road by the score of 30-10.

With the loss, MSU drops to 1-1 on the season, while UMD improves to 2-0. The loss to the Bulldogs snaps MSU's 36-game NSIC winning streak that began on November 5, 2016 against Wayne State (W, 41-30). The loss also snapped MSU's 20-game road winning streak.

The first quarter saw the Bulldogs go up 14-0 quickly as they reached the end zone on their first two drives. John Larson completed a 42-yard touchdown pass to Armani Carmickle, before Cazz Martin put the Bulldogs up 14-0 after an eight yard touchdown run with 9:02 to go in the quarter. The Mavericks managed to get on the board in the first quarter as junior Luke Williams connected on a 24-yard field goal with 2:25 to go in the first quarter to bring the score to 14-3.

In the second quarter, UMD was able to extend its lead to 21-3 after Larson raced into the end zone from four yards out with 9:18 to go in the half. The Mavericks then responded with a six play 56 yard drive that was capped off with a 10-yard touchdown pass from senior JD Ekowa to sophomore Tanner Johnson to bring the Mavericks with 11 of the Bulldogs at 21-10 with 6:24 remaining.

UMD responded with a six minute drive to go back up by 14 at 24-10. The Bulldogs went 59 yards in 12 plays before Curt Cox connected on a 28-yard field goal before both teams went into the locker room.

Defense dominated the majority of the third quarter as neither team was able to get anything going offensively. The Bulldogs were able to break through the Maverick defense on their final drive of the third quarter as they went 45 yards in just under five minutes. Larson capped off the UMD drive with an 11-yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 30-10. The Mavericks blocked the ensuing extra point attempt.

Both defenses stood firm in the final quarter as the Bulldogs came away with the 30-10 win.

As a team, MSU tallied 101 rushing yards, to go along with 145 receiving yards.

Minnesota State returns to Blakeslee Stadium on Saturday, September 18, as it hosts the Bemidji State Beavers. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
