WAYNE, Neb. -- Rated 14th in this week's NCBWA Division II Poll, Minnesota State (25-4, 21-3 NSIC) defeated Wayne State (10-19, 9-16 NSIC) 13-3 in seven innings during a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest, Sunday.
The Mavericks extended their winning streak to eight games with senior outfielder Joey Werner leading the Mavericks with a pair of home runs, a solo shot and a three-run homer, for four RBI. On the hill, junior right-handed pitcher Brendan Knoll got the start and threw six complete innings of three-run baseball to earn his fifth win in his fourth start of the season.
For the third consecutive game, the Mavericks pounced on the Wildcats early scoring once in the first after Werner hit a solo home run to center field to make it a 1-0 game.
In the fourth inning, MSU surged for eight runs on five hits, including a three-run home run for Werner that put the Mavericks up 9-0. The Wildcats responded with one run via an infield single from Peyton Barnes in the bottom half of the fourth to move the deficit to 9-1.
In the fifth, an infield groundout from Andrew Hanson and RBI single hit to center by Bryce Bisenius each drove in a run to shrink the Maverick lead to 9-3.
The sixth inning saw a passed ball score a run for MSU seconds before senior infielder Teddy Petersen hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-run homer, that reestablished the Mavericks nine-run lead.
The Mavericks eventually won the game in the seventh when Nathan Berg grounded out to bring in Ross Indlecoffer and make it 13-3 MSU. Mavericks' right-handed pitcher Jack Zigan relieved Knoll in the seventh and struck out the side to force the 10-run rule for a 13-3 MSU victory.
The Mavericks outhit the Wildcats 12-9 while having the game's only error.
On the mound for the Mavericks, Knoll, now 5-0 in four starts this season, pitched six complete innings allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits. Knoll walked a pair and struck out four. In relief, Zigan came in and shutout the Wildcats to secure the win for MSU by way of the 10-run rule in the seventh inning. While facing five batters, Zigan struck out the side.
For the Wildcats, Ryan Obrecht (3-2) got the loss as WSC's starter. Obrecht pitched 3.2 innings while allowing six hits for eight runs. He walked three while striking out one.
Minnesota State returns home to Bowyer Field this week for a Wednesday doubleheader at 1:30 p.m. against Augustana.
