BEMIDJI, Minn. -- For the sixth time in seven games this season, the Minnesota State baseball team put up double-digit runs when they took down Bemidji State 13-0 to secure the three-game series sweep in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action, Sunday.
The Minnesota State baseball team (6-1, 3-0 NSIC) was explosive on all aspects while defeating Bemidji State (1-7, 0-3 NSIC) to secure its fifth-straight win, first series sweep and remain undefeated in conference play. MSU's long ball played the biggest factor. The Mavericks had 12 home runs over the weekend.
Scoring started in the bottom of the second inning with Maverick junior Nick Altermatt hitting his first home run of the season, a solo shot, to give MSU the game's first lead. Later in the second, senior outfielder Jack Waletich hit an RBI double to center deep enough into the gap that it scored Ty Denzer from first. Then, senior outfielder Joey Werner picked up where he left off on Saturday by hitting his third home run of the weekend, a three-run shot, that made it 5-0. Maverick catcher Ben Livorsi rounded out the rally with a sixth run on an RBI double to left-center that scored Ross Indlecoffer from first base. After two innings of play, the Mavericks owned a 6-0 lead.
Maverick designated hitter Adam Schneider had an RBI ground out in the third that scored Altermatt to make it 7-0. After three innings, MSU was grasping a seven-run lead and 7-1 advantage in hits.
The fifth inning saw Maverick senior Teddy Petersen hit his second home run of the weekend with a three-run shot that made it a 10-run game. It marked the sixth time in seven games that MSU has eclipsed the double-digit run plateau.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 12-run lead when freshman Ryan Friedges hit his first collegiate home run and brought Carter Elliott in to score. The game moved to 13-0 after BSU defensive miscues in the field allowed Nathan Berg to score with ease.
That's where it would ultimately stand as Minnesota State won its fifth-straight game 13-0 over Bemidji State and moved to a perfect 3-0 in the NSIC. The hits department saw MSU outhit BSU 14-1. Perfect in the field all weekend, the Mavericks had no errors while the Beavers ended the series with three.
On the hill making his second start of the season for MSU, Cam Kline is now 1-1 on the year after pitching six complete innings of one-hit baseball that featured 10 strikeouts against 21 BSU batters. Kline walked one while denying the Beavers of any runs in the shutout win. In relief, junior right-hander Brendan Knoll took the ball to work the seventh and finished the game off with a 1-2-3 inning which featured a strikeout.
The loss went to BSU's Levi Arnold (0-1) who pitched 1.2 innings as the Beavers' starter. He surrendered six runs on five hits, walked two and struck out three.
Next up, Minnesota State plays host to Minnesota Duluth this week on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. for a 7/9-inning doubleheader at Bowyer Field.
