3/12/2021 5:54:00 PM

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State soccer team defeated the Upper Iowa Peacocks 4-1 in the final placement game of the 2021 Spring Soccer Tournament in the Maverick All-Sports Dome.

Allie Williams opened the scoring at the 36:16 mark of the first half when she snuck a quick shot past the right side of the goalie with the assist going to Haley Mendoza who found her cutting into the box.

Shortly into the second half, Brynn Desens capitalized on a penalty kick, striking the ball to the lower right-hand corner past the diving goalkeeper to put Minnesota State up 2-0.

Less than five-minutes after Desens' goal, Olivia Thoen hammered a shot into the net off a feed from Shelby Lund. The Peacocks put together a sustained attack and scored a goal in the 64th minute to cut the Maverick lead to
3-1.

The final goal of the game came from Jenny Vetter who capitalized on a pair of passes from Claire Cater and Olivia Sharar which put her in perfect position to redirect the ball past the goalkeeper.

The Mavericks will return to action Sunday Mar. 14th, against the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs in the championship game of the 2021 Spring Soccer Tournament in the Maverick All-Sports Dome, with kickoff scheduled for 5:30.

The Mustangs earned their place in the championship game by way of a third tiebreaker after finishing the event with Wayne State. The first tiebreaker was head-to-head where the teams tied and the second tiebreaker, goal differential was also a tie. Southwest Minnesota State allowed fewer goals overall in the event to break the third tie and earn the right to play in the championship game against Minnesota State.

The other games taking place Sunday to wrap up the event will be Concordia-St. Paul versus Augustana at 12:30 p.m., and Upper Iowa versus Wayne State at 3:00 p.m.
