Mavericks’ Streak Comes to an End; Second-Period Surge Secures Win for Huskies

MANKATO, Minn. -- Minnesota State (6-10-1, 6-10-1 WCHA) saw its streak end Friday, dropping a 4-0 decision to St. Cloud State (4-11-1, 4-11-1 WCHA) in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.

The Huskies routed the Mavericks with four goals in the second period to win 4-0. Freshman forward Emma Gentry led SCSU offensively with a pair of goals while freshman netminder Sanni Ahola recorded a shutout by blanking the Mavericks with 38 stops in Friday's affair.

Both sides played an even first period that saw a 7-7 tie in shots. After one period of action, the Mavericks and Huskies were scoreless.

The Huskies exploded in the middle period for four goals. Gentry scored SCSU's first goal on the power play at the 6:21 mark of the second period. Seconds later at the 6:58 mark, Laura Kluge put SCSU up by two with a one-time shot from the slot off a pass by Taylor Lind. Gentry scored her second goal of the game to make it 3-0 14:30 into the period before Hannah Bates made it 4-0 at the 16:33 mark. After two periods of play, SCSU held the shots advantage, 17-14.

The Mavericks stormed back in the final period but could not find the back of the net. MSU outshot SCSU 24-8 in the final frame while dropping the game 4-0 to the in-state rival.

In net for the Huskies, Ahola (2-5-1) stopped all 38 shots she faced for her second shutout of the season. For the Mavericks, Calla Frank (5-8-1) stopped 21-of-25 shots.

In the game, the Mavericks outshot the Huskies 38-25. The special teams battle saw Minnesota State go 0-for-5 with the man advantage. St. Cloud State scored twice with four cracks on the power play.

The Mavericks and Huskies rematch again tomorrow at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center with a 1:07 p.m. face-off.
