Winona, Minn. --- The Minnesota State University women's basketball won a convincing wire-to-wire 76-59 game Friday against the Winona State. With the win the Mavericks improve to 6-4 (5-3 NSIC) while the Warriors fall to 1-6 (1-5 NSIC).
From the opening tip the Mavericks controlled the pace of the game opening with a 15-3 run to put the Warriors on their heals early.
Joey Batt led the way for Minnesota State in the opening quarter with five points and three quick steals.
The Warriors opened the second quarter with a 9-6 run to cut the Maverick lead to 29-22, but Minnesota State would finish the half with an 11-6 advantage to take a 40-28 lead into the locker loom.
Batt and
Rachel Shumskii both led the Mavericks with 10-points in the first half while Minnesota State forced the Warriors into 20 first half turnovers.
In the second half, the pace of play remained high, but the Mavericks were capable of holding off every challenge from the Warriors. Winona State wasn't able to cut the Minnesota State lead to any less than ten points throughout the third or fourth quarters, and the Mavericks were able to cruise to the 76-59 win.
Tayla Stuttley finished the game as the leading scorer for the Mavericks with 15-points to go along with seven boards and three assists.
Shumski and
Brooke Tonsfeldt added 14-points apiece while
Batt finished with 12-points and eight steals.
Emmaline Polsonn rounded out the double-digit scorers for Minnesota State with 10-points and 7 boards.
As a team, the Mavericks shot 46.5% from the field while outrebounding the Warriors 44-33. Minnesota State forced Winona State into 28 turnovers and turned those into 35 points off of turnovers.
The Mavericks will take on the Warriors again tomorrow with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
