Mavericks Fall to Dragons in Double Overtime

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- Extra time was needed Friday evening at the Sanford Pentagon between Minnesota State and MSU Moorhead, but it was the Dragons who were able to come away with a 73-61 win in double overtime.

With the loss, the Mavericks drop to 10-7 on the season, while the Dragons improve to 10-3. The last time the Mavericks went into double overtime was back on Feb. 16, 2019 when they lost 97-90 against Augustana at home.

The first half saw the Dragons take advantage of some early Maverick turnovers as they jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first 5:20 of the game. Scoring would be hard to come by following the first five minutes as the Dragons led the Mavericks 16-12 as the teams went to the bench for the media timeout at 8:48.

Both defenses continued to control the pace through the final nine minutes of the half, but it was MSU Moorhead that was able to build the game's first double-digit lead at 28-17 with 4:20 to go in the half. The Dragons would eventually carry a 33-21 lead into the locker room.

Junior Kelby Kramer and freshman Brady Williams each tallied five points in the first half for the Mavericks, with Kramer hauling in 10 rebounds. As a team, the Mavericks shot 28.1% from the field.

Lorenzo McGhee led all scorers in the first half with 11 points, while Gavin Baumgartner tallied 10 points. As a team, the Dragons shot 37.5% from the field in the opening stanza.

The second half saw the Dragon increase their lead to 14 points at 40-26 with 16:11 to go in the half. The Mavericks would respond with a 22-8 run to knot up the score at 48-48 with 8:45 to go in the game. That stretch included an 11-0 run that saw sophomore Malik Willingham tally five points and Williams score four.

Neither team would lead by more than two points the rest of the way in regulation. Tied at  55-55 in the closing seconds, MSU Moorhead's Bryce Irsfeld missed his last-second shot as the game went into overtime.

The first overtime saw little scoring as each team managed to score four points each. This time the Mavericks had the ball in the closing seconds but a layup from junior Devonte Thedford just rolled off the rim as the game went into double overtime tied 59-59.

The first 1:31 of double overtime saw each team score a basket, but MSU Moorhead was able to finish on a 12-0 run to claim the 73-61 win.

Kramer notched his ninth career double-double as he tallied 13 points, while matching his career-high with 19 rebounds. Willingham added 16 points, while sophomore Quincy Anderson tallied 12 points and four assists.

As a team, the Mavericks shot 31.6% from the field. They also hauled in 52 rebounds and recorded eight blocks.

Baumgartner and McGhee led all scorers with 21 points each. McGhee also hauled in eight rebounds. As a team, the Dragons shot 36.6% from the field and cashed in on 16-of-21 (.762) shots from the free throw line.

The NCAA Men's Basketball Selection Show is set to air on NCAA.com at 9:30 p.m. (CST) on Sunday, March 7.
