Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State University women's basketball won its second game of the weekend 72-48 to complete the season sweep of Upper Iowa. With the win the Mavericks improve to 8-5 (7-4 NSIC) while the Peacocks fall to 1-13 (0-12 NSIC).
The Maverick offense opened the game in rhythm as they quickly jumped out to an 8-0 lead with a
Tayla Stuttley layup. The Peacocks made a comeback, but after being held scoreless in the 2:17 of the first quarter, Minnesota State took a 19-7 lead into the break.
Both offenses struggled to find any footing to start the second quarter, but in the final six minutes, the Mavericks outscored the Peacocks 9-7 to take a 32-21 lead into the halftime locker room.
In the first half
Stuttley led the Mavericks with seven points while
Rachel Shumski tallied five points and seven rebounds.
As a team, Minnesota State forced Upper Iowa into 13 turnovers in the half, scoring nine points off of them and held a slight edge in rebounding 28-27.
The Mavericks opened the second half with a 7-0 run that quickly forced the Peacocks to use a timeout after
Shumski came away with a steal at mid court and took the ball in for a layup. Minnesota State continued to expand its lead to 18 points where the teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter.
In the fourth, the Mavericks were once again able to get the entire roster involved as they expanded their lead to as many as 28 points down the stretch, ultimately coming away with a 72-48 victory.
Scoring was once again a team effort as
Stuttley led the way with 13 points and
Shumski recorded 11 points to go along with eight boards and three steals.
As a team, the Mavericks forced 22 turnovers while recording 13 steals and 20 points off of turnovers. Minnesota State also racked up 18 assists on its 26 made field goals in the game.
The Mavericks will complete the 2021 regular season next weekend with a pair of games against Concordia-St. Paul with Friday's tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and Saturday's game scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
