Mavericks Pick up 5-1 Victory at Ferris State Saturday

Big Rapids, Mich. ---  Ferris State got on the board first, but #2 Minnesota State responded with five unanswered goals as the visiting Mavericks cruised to a 5-1 victory in a road Central Collegiate Hockey Association game played in Big Rapids, Mich., Saturday.

The Bulldogs, who had lost 15 consecutive times to the Mavericks before claiming a 2-1 win over the Mavericks Friday night, led 1-0 Saturday on a goal by Dallas Tulik at 3:54 of the second. A power play goal scored by Cade Borchardt off a rebound at 9:23 evened the score, and the Mavericks took the lead for the first time when senior winger Reggie Lutz wristed a shot into the net at 15:38 for his sixth goal of the season. Sophomore center David Silye scored his first goal as a Maverick a short time later (15:55) and at the end of forty minutes of action, the score stood 3-1 in favor of Minnesota State.

The Mavericks scored twice in the third period to put the game out of reach.  Borchardt got his second goal of the game (and his second goal of the year) when he tipped Akito Hirose's shot from the point past FSU netminder Roni Salmenkangas at 11:56. Sophomore center Ondrej Pavel walked out from the corner to the slot area before connecting for his second goal of the season at 18:39 to close out the scoring in the contest.

Junior center Nathan Smith, who had two assists in the game, extended his point-scoring streak to six games during which he's tallied 2-5--7.

The Mavericks, who outshot the Bulldogs by a 33-20 margin in the game, were two-for-five with the man advantage. Ferris State was zero-for-four in power plays.

Senior goaltender Dryden McKay stopped 19 shots and now stands 7-3-0 for the season. The win is the 82nd of his college career and gives him the Minnesota State men's hockey record for career wins, surpassing the 81 wins by Steve Carroll, who played for the Mavericks from 1977-81.

Now 7-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 CCHA, Minnesota State continues league play next weekend with Bowling Green visiting Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center Friday and Saturday.
