Mavericks Take Down Rangers In Non-Conference Tilt

Mankato, Minn. —The Minnesota State women's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 NSIC) hosted the UW-Parkside women's basketball team in a weekend double header at Taylor Center Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks outshot the Rangers in every category to take a convincing win 93-75.

The Mavericks offense was led by sophomore Joey Batt as she put down a hard earned 21 points, six assists and three steals to lead the Mavericks. Batt was also perfect from the charity stripe as she went 12-12. Sophomore Emily Russo led the Mavericks on the glass as she hauled in five rebounds and had eight points in her effort on the floor this afternoon. The Maverick's defense was stout as senior Rylee Menster swiped five steals for the Mavericks and added six points to the offensive effort.

Quarter one saw a tightly contested game as both teams battled hard but, were not able to create any separation on the scoreboard. About halfway through the first quarter Batt got the pass from a Menster steal to put down a fast break driving layup to break the 10-10 tie and put the Mavericks up two. The Mavericks would begin their offensive ascent as they lead by as much as eight in the first stanza. In the second however the Rangers would stand their ground as they clawed back to tie it up at 28 all with 5:21 remaining in the half. The Mavericks would once again assert their dominance and end the half on a seven-point run and would lead at half 43-34.

As a team, the Mavericks shot 42.5% from the field and 33.3% from downtown. The Mavericks carried a slim 22-20 rebound margin into the locker room.

The Mavericks would turn that seven-point run that ended the half and turn it into an 11-point run to begin the third. The Mavericks would lead by as much as 18 in third as the offense continued to be dominant. The Rangers would get as close as 10 in the fourth but, after two made free throws by Tayla Stuttley on a fast break driving layup attempt would push the lead back above 10. The Mavericks defense remained consistent and strong the rest of the way as they coasted to an 18-point victory with a final of 93-75.

As a team, the Mavericks finished their offensive performance by shooting 44.6% from the field and 43.5% from behind the arc. The Mavericks out rebounded the Rangers 39-37 and had 14 steals in their effort.

The Mavericks have a trifecta of games next week as they travel to Concordia-St. Paul for their first NSIC match-up against the Golden Bears with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Then, the Mavericks have some Thanksgiving action as they head to San Antonio, Texas to take part in the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic.
