Minnesota State Handles Minot in Conference Action

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (13-14, 8-11 NSIC) traveled to Minot State (1-24, 1-18 NSIC) Saturday evening as the Mavericks squared off against the Beavers. The Mavericks brought out their brooms as the Mavericks won in a clean sweep with a final score of 3-0 as well as the season sweep of the Beavers (25-16, 25-7, 25-16).

The Mavericks attack was led by junior Jessica Nelson  who paced the Mavericks with 10 kills this evening. Senior Dana Schindler aided Nelson in the offensive effort with 25 assists. Also, of note senior liber Mara Quam added 3 service aces. Defensively the Mavericks were led by Quam who had 13 digs on the contest. Also, freshman Kiya Durant and sophomore Sophie Tietz brought the roof down four times each.

As a team, the Mavericks hit .316 with 34 kills, 4 service aces, 36 digs and 17 blocks.

Set Breakdown:

Set 1: The Beavers hung tough with Mavericks to an 7-7 tie early in the match. The Mavericks would turn up the heat as they went on a 4-0 run to gain some separation. The Mavericks would increase the lead to seven multiple times in the first set, the biggest lead they would have. With the Mavericks up 22-16, Durant would spark the 3-0 mini run with a kill that pushed the Mavericks to victory in set one with a final of 25-16.

Set 2: With the score even at two to begin the set, the Mavericks offense was on fire. The Mavericks proceeded to go on a 7-0 run to gain a sizable 9-2 advantage. The Beavers had no answer for the Mavericks vicious attack in set two. The Mavericks would go on back to back 4-0 runs to extend the margin to 14 with a score of 19-5.  The Mavericks would end the set on a 5-1 run and put down the Beavers in set two 25-7.

Set 3: With the Mavericks relentless attack in full swing they quickly accelerated to a 13-5 lead in set three. The Mavericks would give up the next two points before extending their margin to 10, with a 17-7 lead. The Beavers would show some resilience as they would muster up a 6-0 run to get within six late with a score of 22-16. This would be as close as they wold get as the Mavericks capped the set victory and match sweep with a Brenna Hesse service ace for a final score of 3-0 in favor of the Mavericks.

The Mavericks will hit the road for the final time Saturday as they travel to Bismarck, N.D., to take on the Marauders of the University of Mary in their final match of the season. First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m.
