Mavericks Grab Third Consecutive Clean Sheet in Victory Over Northern State

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- The Minnesota State claimed its' third straight win and shutout in a 2-0 victory over Northern State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer match, Sunday.

The Mavericks (6-2-1, 4-1-1 NSIC) scored two goals in Sunday's match, with one in the first half before a second in the final half, while not allowing any goals against thanks to a four-save effort from freshman goalkeeper Clare Longueville for her second clean sheet of the season which blanked the Wolves (4-3-1, 3-2-1 NSIC) in the score column.

Sophomore Tia Martin scored her first goal of the season off an assist from freshman Maille Mathis in the 35th minute to give the Mavericks the first lead, 1-0. MSU carried the one-goal lead into halftime.

The Mavericks scored their second goal in the 83rd minute when freshman Claire Cater scored her third goal of the season off an assist from Olivia Thoen. MSU held on in the waning minutes to take down NSU 2-0.

Longueville was strong in goal for the Mavericks where she was called upon to make four stops. For the Wolves, Alexus Townsend made five stops while allowing two goals against.

The Mavericks doubled up the Wolves in shots 12-6 with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. While dominating offensive-end possession time, the Mavericks also garnered a 9-2 lead in corners during the match.

The Mavericks return to The Pitch in Mankato next weekend to play host to the Upper Iowa Peacocks, Friday at 3:00 p.m., before taking on the Winona State Warriors, Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
