St. Paul, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (11-11, 6-8 NSIC) traveled to St. Paul, Minn. to take on the Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (19-4, 13-1 NSIC) in a critical NSIC matchup for the Mavericks. The Mavericks were defeated by the Golden Bears in three straight sets (14-25, 12- 25, 12-25).
The Mavericks got an early advantage in set one as they jumped to a 4-2 lead. The #7 ranked Golden Bears quickly responded as they proceeded to go on a 7-0 run to take the lead at 9-4. The Mavericks weathered the storm as they answered the bell with a 7-2 run to get the score knotted at 11. From here the Mavericks would only put down three more points as the Golden Bears would go on a 4-0 run, 5-0 run and another 5-0 run to put away the Mavericks in set one with a final score of 25-14.
Set two saw the Mavericks battle hard early and get the score to 6-6. Once again, the Golden Bears would put their foot on the gas and rip off another 5-0 run to take a 11 to 6 lead. The Mavericks were unable to establish any substantial offensive threat as the Golden Bears out paced the Mavericks to a 17-12 advantage. From here, the Golden Bears would go on a 8-0 run to take a decisive set two victory.
The Golden Bears came out in set three determined to not let the Mavericks gain any momentum. The Golden Bears raced to a 6-0 lead to start the set. They would continue to create separation as they went on a 3-0 run to take an eight point lead with a score of 18-10. The Mavericks would try and answer back but, were only able to muster up two points. The Golden Bears would once again close out the set on a big run, as they reeled off seven unanswered points. They would defeat the Mavericks in set three with a final score of 25-12 and a 3-0 sweep in the Match.
The Mavericks offensive effort was led by sophomore Ellie Danielson with 6 kills. Freshman Brooke Bolwerk aided in this effort with 9 assists. Defensively, the Mavericks were led by senior libero Mara Quam as she contributed 16 digs in the Match.
The Mavericks hit the floor again this Saturday, October 30th as they return to Taylor Center with a home contest against the Peacocks of Upper Iowa. First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m.
