Mavericks Storm Past Bulldogs for Seventh Straight Victory

MANKATO, Minn. -- Minnesota State picked up its seventh consecutive win, defeating Minnesota Duluth 5-1 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer match, Sunday afternoon at The Pitch.

With the win, the Mavericks improve to 10-2-1 on the season, including an 8-1-1 NSIC record which moved MSU into a tie for second in the NSIC standings. With the loss, the Bulldogs drop to 2-10-1, including a 2-7-1 conference record.

Junior forward Nadia Lowery scored the Mavericks' first goal of the match in the 12th minute off an assist from Jenny Vetter. Roughly 15 minutes later, in the 27th minute, Vetter scored to make it 2-0. Vetter's 13th goal of the season was the eventual game-winning goal, the 18th of her career, to move her into a tie with Laura Leber (2007-10) for the second most game-winning goals scored by a Maverick in program history (record held by Korey Kronfrost with 19 GWG from 2012-15). Freshman forward Molly Mosher made it 3-0 in the 39th minute when she scored the first goal of her collegiate career.

In the second half, Vetter scored her scored goal of the match for her fifth point of the afternoon in the 50th minute to make it 4-0. Freshman defender Natalie Thoen scored her first goal as a Maverick in the 54th minute to up MSU's lead to 5-0. That concluded the scoring for MSU, but UMD broke MSU's streak of 652:07 without surrendering a goal in 74th minute when Anna Tobias scored to make it 5-1. The Mavericks held on to win, marking their seventh consecutive victory.

In goal, freshman Clare Longueville, now 5-1 in her inaugural campaign with MSU, stopped three shots one goal against in the win.

In total, MSU dominated UMD in shots, 25-7, shots on goal, 14-4, and corner kicks, 9-0. The Mavericks possessed the ball for 61% of the match.

Up next, Minnesota State travels west to North Dakota to take on Minot State, Friday at 5:00 p.m., before taking on UMary, Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
