Mavericks Toppled By #5 Wayne State

The Minnesota State volleyball team (11-8, 6-5 NSIC) was defeated by #5 Wayne State volleyball team in three consecutive sets with a final score 3-0 (10-25, 22-25, 11-25).

In set one the Mavericks were facing a big challenge in trying to tame the Wildcats ferocious attack. The Wildcats immediately showed their offensive prowess and went on a 5-0 run to begin the match. The Mavericks had little to answer with, as the Wildcats roared to an 11-4 lead. From there, the Wildcats attack would only heat up. They went on a 8-0 run to take a large 18-4 advantage deep in set one. The Mavericks would muster up six more points the rest of set one and would ultimately fall to the Wildcats 25-10.

The Mavericks would regroup in set two and put up a big fight to combat the Wildcats power. The Maverick offense would come alive as they were able to gain a 12-6 lead early in the set. The Mavericks would have to withstand a Wildcat 5-1 run which closed the margin to two. The Mavericks would answer with a run of their own as they reeled off a 4-0 run to regain a six point advantage. The Wildcats would have an offensive surge from here as they answered with a 8-1 run to take a one point lead with a score of 19-18. The Mavericks would take the next two points and regain the lead once again at 20-19. The Wildcats would claw back and take six of the final eight points of the set to down the Mavericks.

The Mavericks in set three were in a big hole and needed to find a way to climb back into the match. The Mavericks hung close and got the score knotted at eight but, the Wildcats offense turned up the heat and went on a 9-0 run to take a 17-8 lead late in set three. The Wildcats were full steam ahead as they went on a 8-2 run to close out set three and the match with a 25- 11 victory.

The Mavericks were lead on offense by sophomore Ellie Danielson who had 8 kills on the contest. Senior Dana Schindler added 16 assists to the offensive effort and led the team with 11 digs. Freshman Kiya Durant led the way in blocks with 3. Senior Mara Quam had 9 digs in the match which was enough to surpass Haley Fogarty (2013-2016) in all-time career digs for the Mavericks with a total of 1,742 digs.

The Mavericks return to action as they hit the road again and travel to Marshall, Minn., Friday October 22nd to take on #10 Southwest Minnesota State with first serve at 6:00 p.m. Then, they continue the road swing as they head to Sioux Falls, S.D., to take on University of Falls Saturday October 23rd with first serve slated for 4:00 p.m.
