Vetter’s Late Goal Lifts Mavericks Over Huskies

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota State women's soccer team picked up its ninth victory of the season and sixth consecutive shutout Friday afternoon at The Pitch as it bested St. Cloud State 1-0.

With the win, the Mavericks improve to 9-2-1 on the season, including a 7-1-1 NSIC record. With the loss, the Huskies drop to 3-5-2, including a 3-3-2 conference record.

After one half of action, the Mavericks and Huskies were scoreless. SCSU was edging MSU 6-5 in shots at the break.

In the second half, MSU's junior forward Jenny Vetter scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 82nd minute on a far-side shot that found the top-right corner of the goal. Sophomore forward Olivia Thoen collected the assist on Vetter's game-winner, which marked the 17th game-winning goal of Vetter's career to bring her within one of Laura Leber (2007-10) who collected 18 game-winners as a Maverick.

In goal, sophomore Mackenzie Rath earned her fifth career clean sheet with a four-save showing in the win which upped her record to 5-1-1. Sunday's clean-sheet victory also marked the Mavericks' eighth shutout of the season.

In total, MSU recorded 14 shots, including six on goal compared to SCSU's 10 shots with four landing on goal. The Mavericks also enjoyed a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Minnesota State closes out this homestand with one more match at The Pitch this weekend against Minnesota Duluth, Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
