BEMIDJI, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team sealed a sweep over Bemidji State with a 4-0 shutout win, Saturday.
For Minnesota State, now 4-7-1, 4-7-1 WCHA, the pair of wins over Bemidji State, now 1-6-1, 1-6-1 WCHA, mark the Mavericks first sweep of a road series since taking on St. Cloud State, Oct. 25-26, 2019. Prior to this weekend, the last time MSU swept BSU dated back to a series that was played at All Seasons Arena in Mankato on Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 2008.
Mavericks' sophomore netminder Calla Frank stood tall to stop all 23 shots she faced while securing her first shutout of the season and third of her career.
After one period of scoreless play, BSU held the upperhand in the shot department, 9-7.
In the second period, the Mavericks took a two-goal lead with a pair of markers. Senior defenseman Jessica Kondas scored MSU's first goal on the power play 2:46 into the second with a shot from the point that clipped BSU goaltender Kerrigan Dowhy before trickling into the net. Sophomore forward Kelsey King scored the Mavericks second goal by redirecting a Taylor Wemple point shot to make it 2-0 14:31 into the second period. MSU carried the 2-0 lead into the second intermission along with a 20-17 advantage in shots.
MSU doubled up its lead with another pair of goals in the final period. King added a second goal on a breakaway after a nice feed from freshman forward Maddie Mashuga 17:39 into the third period. Mashuga followed up the assist by adding a goal 23 seconds later to make it 4-0, where the game ultimately stood.
MSU claimed the shots advantage 27-23. Frank, now 3-5-1, stopped all 23 shots she faced on her way to securing her second win of the weekend and first shutout of the season. Opposing netminder Dowhy, now 1-5-1 this season, stopped 23 of the 27 shots she faced.
MSU scored the game's lone power play goal. Both sides had three chances with the man advantage.
In their next action, the Mavericks travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the Buckeyes, Jan. 22-23.
