Mavericks Complete Road Sweep of Mustangs

MARSHALL, Minn. --- It proved to be all Minnesota State Sunday afternoon as the Mavericks led throughout in their 95-67 road win over Southwest Minnesota State.

With the win, MSU improves to 6-2, including a 5-1 NSIC record. With the loss, SMSU drops to 2-4, including a 0-2 conference record.

The Mavericks began the day connecting on 7-of-9 shots in the first five minutes of the game to go up 16-9. Sophomore Quincy Anderson notched six points, while sophomores Ryland Holt and Malik Willingham each tallied four points. The Mustangs were then able to go on a 12-7 to pull within two of the Mavericks at 23-21 with 9:12 to go in the half.

Minnesota State would finish the final nine minutes of the half outscoring the Mustangs 23-10 to take a 46-31 lead into the locker room. That included a 16-0 run, with eight of the points coming courtesy of freshman Brady Williams.

Anderson finished the first half leading all scorers with 14 points, while Willingham added 11 points. Williams posted 10 points and five rebounds, while junior Devonte Thedford passed out six assists. As a team, MSU shot 19-of-37 (.514) from the field, while forcing nine SMSU turnovers.

Nick Dufault led the Mustang offense in the first half with 11 points, while Alex Hillesheim tallied nine.

The Mavericks opened the second half on a 13-9 run to go up 59-40 with just under 15 minutes to play in the game. Holt tallied five of MSU's 13 points during that stretch. Minnesota State would maintain its double-digit lead through the rest of the game as it cruised to a 95-67 victory.

Anderson led the Mavericks with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Willingham finished with 17 points. Junior Kelby Kramer and Williams each tallied 13 points also, while Holt notched 11 points. Thedford passed out a game-high eight assists as well. Sophomore Landon Wolfe finished with 12 points as he went 4-of-4 from three point range. 

As a team, MSU shot 37-of-67 (.552) from the field, including a 12-of-23 (.522) performance from downtown. The Mavericks also enjoyed a 40-26 advantage on the boards and passed out 22 assists.

Dufault led the Mustangs with 18 points, while Kaden Evans finished with 15 points. As a team, SMSU shot 26-of-57 (.456) from the field.

Minnesota State returns to Taylor Center next weekend to begin a four-game homestand as it takes Sioux Falls. Friday's tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., with Saturday's tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
