MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team opened up its 2020-21 season with a 74-59 home loss to Bemidji State in a nonconference matchup.
With the win, BSU improves to 1-0 on the season, while the Mavericks drop to 0-1.
In the opening minutes of the first half the Maverick offense was finding its groove after a pair of ally-oop scores flushed home by junior
Kelby Kramer. After a two-point jumper from Kramer, Minnesota State expanded its early lead to 17-12 over Bemidji State with 12:17 to go in the half.
Neither team was able to pull away for the remainder of the first half until the Beavers rallied off a 9-0 run to finish the half and take a 41-35 lead into the locker room.
In the first half, the Mavericks shot 51.7% from the field compared to 51.6% for the Beavers with both teams making a pair of three-point shots.
Coming out of halftime, Bemidji State went on a 15-5 run that extended its lead to 16 points with 14:41 to go in the half. Despite some effective plays down the stretch, Minnesota State was not able to cut into the lead ultimately falling by the final of 74-59.
Sophomore
Quincy Anderson led the Mavericks in scoring with 16-points in his return to action while Kramer finished the game with 14-points, five boards and four blocks.
As a team, Minnesota State finished the game shooting, 41% from the floor while Bemidji State finished the game with a 45.3% shooting percentage.
Derek Thompson notched a double-double as he tallied a game-high 33 points and 12 rebounds. Nick Wagner added 18 points for the Beavers also. As a team, BSU shot 45.3.6% from the field
Minnesota State concludes its weekend series with Bemidji State on Sunday at Taylor Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
