Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State University women's basketball team rebounded with an 84-71 win over the Wayne State Wildcats Sunday evening. With the win the Mavericks improve to 3-3 (2-2 NSIC) while the Wildcats fall to 2-4 (1-3 NSIC).
In the opening minutes the pace of play from both teams remained incredibly quick from Saturday nights game but the Wildcats were the team that jumped out to the early 18-12 lead. Bolstered by strong play from forward 
Mikayla Nachazel off the bench though the Mavericks responded with an 11-0 run to end the quarter and take a 23-18 lead into the break.
Minnesota State pushed its lead to as many as 11 points over the course of the second quarter, but Wayne State was able to cut the lead down to 42-39 with 1:29 to go in the half. 
Maddy Olson responded with a pair of tough makes against contact and a last second steal and jumper from 
Rylee Mensterr gave the Mavericks a 50-42 lead going into the half.
Nachazel led all players with 11 points in the half while Olson finished with eight and 
Rachel Shumski added seven points.
Minnesota State forced Wayne State into 12 turnovers in the firsts half and shot 46.3% from the field compared to 48.6% for the Wildcats.
The pace of the third quarter slowed down significantly but with 
Nachazel continuing to stave off Wayne State runs, the Mavericks took a 66-55 lead into the fourth. The closest the Wildcats came in the 4
th was eight points with 5:47 to go, but Minnesota State hit a couple of threes out of a timeout that put the game out of reach and allowing the Mavericks to come away with the 84-71 win.
Nachazel finished the game with a career high 17 points and was joined by Olson who added 17 of her own. 
Shumski finished the game with 12 points while 
Tayla Stuttley added 10 as well.
As a team the Mavericks shot 45.7% from the field compared to 38.9% for the Wildcats and forced Wayne State into 18 turnovers. Minnesota State's bench outscored Wayne State 49-18 while converting 14 of 16 free throw opportunities.
The Mavericks will play return to action next weekend with a two-game home series against Southwest Minnesota State with Friday night's tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and Saturday's game scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
