Mavericks Tripped Up by Wildcats on Road

WAYNE, Neb. --- Minnesota State's three-game winning streak came to an end Friday evening as the Mavericks fell to Wayne State 85-68.

With the loss, MSU drops to 3-2, including a 2-1 NSIC record. With the win, WSC improves to 3-2, including a 2-1 conference record.

The opening 10 minutes of the first half belonged to the Wildcats as they built a 29-7 lead over the Mavericks with 9:36 to go. WSC shot 13-of-16 from the field in the opening 10 minutes as it led by as many as 23 points.

The Wildcats would lead by at least 18 points throughout the remainder of the first half as they took a 40-21 lead into the locker room.

Junior Devonte Thedford tallied six points, while sophomore Quincy Anderson added five. As a team, MSU shot 33.3% from the field in the first half.

Justin Eagins led the Wildcats in the first half with 12 points, while Nate Mohr tallied 11. As a unit, WSC shot 56.7% from the field in the opening stanza.

Trailing 50-25 with 16:46 to go in the game, MSU was able to cut into the Wildcats' lead over the next seven minutes as it went on a 19-12 run to get back within 18 points of the Wildcats at 62-44 with 9:40 to go. 

Minnesota State would not be able to get much closer throughout the remainder of the game as Wayne State went on to claim the 85-68 win.

Thedford and freshman Brady Williams led the Maverick offense with 13 points each, while sophomore Malik Willingham netted nine points. Kramer hauled in a team-best eight rebounds, while Thedford and Willingham each passed out three helpers.

As a team, MSU shot 39.7% from the field, including a 10-of-27 (.370) showing from three point range. The Mavericks also hauled in 31 rebounds.

Mohr led the Wildcat offense with 22 points, while Eagins tallied 16 points. Jordan Janssen finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists also.

As a team, WSC shot 60.7% from the field, including a 7-of-14 (.500) showing from three point range. The Wildcats also passed out 17 assists.

The Mavericks conclude their weekend road series with Wayne State on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., at Rice Auditorium.
