Sioux Falls, S.D. --- The Minnesota State University women's basketball team earned an 87-82 overtime win over Augustana behind a career day from sophomore guard
Joey Batt who scored 28 points. With the win the Mavericks improve to 2-2 (1-1 NSIC) while the Vikings fall to 2-2 (1-1 NSIC).
The pace of play was very quick in the opening minutes of the game and despite the Vikings opening the game with a 7-0 run, the Mavericks took a 13-12 lead with just under four minutes to go when
Brooke Tonsfeldt converted a layup. After
Batt drilled a three out of the timeout, Augustana went on a 7-2 run to end the quarter, taking a 19-18 lead over Minnesota State.
The second quarter was back and forth with the Vikings holding onto a three to five point lead and after
Shea Fuller hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to four, Augustana finished out the half with a 4-1 push to go into the locker room with a 39-32 lead.
Batt led Minnesota State with eight points in the first half while
Tonsfeldt was responsible for six points as well as six boards.
Both teams recorded 22 rebounds in the first half while the Vikings held the edge in shooting percentage, making 46.7% of their shots compared to 27% for the Mavericks.
Despite an eight-point deficit coming out of the media timeout, the Mavericks immediately went on a 7-0 run capped off by a
Batt three pointer coming off a screen and pass to make the Viking lead 50-49 with 3:27 to go in the third. Minnesota State took its first lead of the second half when
Rylee Menster converted on a pair of free throws, giving the Mavericks a 53-52 lead however the Vikings responded with six straight points to end the third.
In the fourth, Minnesota State once again continued to chip into the Augustana lead, cutting it down to 68-67 with 4:10 to go when
Batt converted all three free throws after getting fouled on a three-point attempt.
Batt went on to score five more points in a row as Minnesota State took a 72-68 lead. In the final seconds, down by two, the Vikings banked in a runner to tie the game with a tenth of a second to go in the game and the Mavericks weren't able to get a clean shot, sending the game to overtime tied 74-74.
The overtime period was all Minnesota State as
Stuttley hit the opening shot and as the period came to a close, the Mavericks capitalized on their free throws while smothering the Vikings on the defensive end to claim the 87-82 win.
Batt finished with a career best 28 points and connected on six three pointers.
Stuttley recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while
Rachel Shumski added 14 points and nine boards.
As a team the Mavericks recorded 52 rebounds compared to 44 from the Vikings and also forced Augustana into 22 turnovers.
The Mavericks will play their first home games of the year next weekend as they host Wayne State at Taylor Center. Friday, Jan. 15
th, the game will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. while the Saturday game is scheduled to tip-off at 3:00 p.m.
