Clermont, Fla. --- Minnesota State finished The Spring Games a perfect 10-0 with a pair of victories in the final day of action. In game one, MSU defeated Hillsdale 8-4, followed by a 9-1 (5) win over the Bloomfield in five innings.
With the results, the Mavericks improve to 17-3 on the season while the Chargers fall to 3-16 and the Bears fell to 1-8.
Game 1
Katie Bracken (6-1) started the game and earned the win pitching the six innings and allowing three runs, two of them earned, on eight hits while striking out six.
Mackenzie Ward pitched the seventh inning for the Mavericks allowing one run on one hit while striking out three batters. Dana Weidinger (2-5) started for the Chargers and took the loss pitching three innings and allowed four runs, two of them earned, on six hits.
The Chargers scored first in the bottom of the second inning when a single plated a run to give them a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks responded in the top of the third when
Carly Esselman drilled a two-run homer followed by a pair of runs scored on an error and a single, giving MSU a 4-1 lead.
Hillsdale scored their second run of the game in the fifth inning on a double and added another run in the sixth, cutting the Maverick lead to 4-3.
Hannah McCarville added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning on a single that scored two runners. Minnesota State added two more runs in the seventh and despite earning a run in the bottom of the inning, the Chargers weren't able to mount a comeback and the Mavericks won the game 8-4
Kayla Moky finished the game 2-3 from the plate and stole two bases successfully.
McCarville went 3-4 from the plate with two RBI.
Esselman finished the game going 2-5 with three RBI, a double and a homerun.
Game 2
McKayla Armbruster (4-0) started the game for Minnesota State and pitched the five-inning complete game allowing one run on three hits while striking out eight batters to earn the win. Maddie Feddersen (1-4) started for the Bears and took the loss allowing nine runs, seven of them earned, on 12 hits.
After a scoreless first inning, Minnesota State struck first when
Moky hit a single that brought in a run. After a 1-2-3 inning from the Bears, the Mavericks put two more runs on the board with a two-run homer from
Sydney Nielsen.
In the fourth inning, Minnesota State strung together a series of singles, resulting in four total runs coming in and pushing the lead to 7-0 before Bloomfield scored its one run of the game in the top of the fifth on a single through the left side.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Esselman continued her fiery start to the season with a two-run walk-off homerun, due to the run rule.
Esselman finished the game 2-4 from the plate with three runs scored and two RBI.
Nielsen and
McCarville each went 2-3 from the plate with three and one RBI respectively.
Minnesota State will take the weekend off before traveling to St. Joseph, Mo. for the Hy-Vee Softball Classic starting Friday, Mar. 20th. There, Minnesota State will play five games over the course of three days.
