Mavericks Come Up Short in First Game of Home-and-Home Series Against Third-Ranked Minnesota

MANKATO, Minn. ---The Minnesota State women's hockey team fell 5-1 to #3 Minnesota in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action, Thursday.

Despite outshooting the Gophers (4-1-0, 4-1-0 WCHA), 41-28, the Mavericks dropped their fourth game of the season and now play behind a 1-4-0 overall and conference record this season.

Junior forward Abigail Boreen scored the game's first goal 11:09 into the opening period when she got a hand-off feed from junior Catie Skaja to go in on a breakaway where she slid the puck to the right past Maverick goaltender Lauren Bench. Junior defenseman Crystalyn Hengler was credited with a secondary assist.

MSU doubled up UMN on shots in the second period, claiming a 14-7 advantage in the middle period. However, the Gophers held the 1-0 lead into the second intermission.

The third-period scoring started 2:21 in when senior defenseman Olivia Knowles scored her first goal of the season. At the 5:34 mark, Freshman forward Sydney Langseth started a scoring streak with her second goal in two games to make it 2-1. Assisting on the Mavericks marker was freshman Jamie Nelson, also extending her point streak to four points in two games, and senior defenseman Jessica Kondas. From there, the Gophers began a surge that saw three goals with momentum triggered by Boreen, who scored unassisted at 9:38 for her second goal of the game. The unanswered trio of tallies guided the Gophers to a 5-1 victory in the first game of the series.

In her first collegiate start, Barbro (0-1-0) stopped 23-of-28 shots while opposing goaltender Lauren Bench(4-1-0) saved 40-of-41 shots for second star of the game.

Both sides were blanked with one opportunity on the power play during Thursday's affair.

The Mavericks and Gophers face-off at 6:07 p.m. tomorrow night at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.
