Mankato, Minn. --- #2 Minnesota State survived a double overtime thriller by defeating Minnesota Duluth 2-1 at The Pitch on Friday afternoon.
The win improves the Mavericks record to a 6-0-0 (3-0-0 NSIC) undefeated record on the season and extends MSU's home unbeaten streak to 35 matches, dating back to Sept. 18, 2016. The Bulldogs drop to 3-3-0 (1-2-0 NSIC) after the loss.
Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth exchanged goals within 30 seconds of each other in the 13th minute of the first half. The Mavericks scored first as sophomore Brynn Desens gathered a pass from senior Dakota Wendell and rifled a shot past the Bulldog goalkeeper. This was Desens' team-leading fourth goal of the season to put MSU up 1-0. UMD answered quickly however, as senior Emily Hinz took it upon herself and scored her fifth goal of the season past senior Alexa Rabune. The match was tied 1-1 heading into halftime even though the Mavericks outshot the Bulldogs 9-2 in the first half.
MSU outshot UMD again in the second half and the first overtime period 18-2, but the match was still tied 1-1 heading into the second overtime. In the 106th minute, sophomore Jenny Vetter received a pass in the box by Wendell from just past the midfield line and was able to beat the Bulldog keeper to the low right hand corner. This was also Vetter's team-leading fourth goal on the season and second game-winning goal.
Rabune (6-0-0) allowed her first goal of the season, but stayed perfect in the win column after making two saves. Sophomore Sophia Grenz (3-3-0) made 12 stops, while allowing two goals for the Bulldogs.
The Mavericks outshot the Bulldogs by a big 30-4 margin (14-3 on net) and held the advantage in the corner kick department by a count of 4-0.
Minnesota State will finish the homestand on Sunday as St. Cloud State will come to The Pitch as the match begins at 1:00 p.m.
