Fayette, Iowa --- #3 Minnesota State extended its winning streak to five matches after claiming a 6-0 victory over Upper Iowa on Sunday afternoon.
Before everyone could get into their seats for the match, Minnesota State scored with just 33 seconds coming off the clock to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Nadia Lowery scored her first goal of the season with junior Brittaney Kroll and sophomore Brynn Desens garnering the assists. The Mavericks scored two more times right before halftime to take a 3-0 lead at the break. Senior Alesha Duccini scored her second goal of the weekend and the season with freshman Tia Martin assisting her in the 41st minute. Two minutes later, freshman Allie Williams got in on the action by also scoring her second goal of the season with Martin collecting another assist.
The leading point scorer from a year ago for the Mavericks, senior Dakota Wendell, scored her third goal of the season tying her for the team lead. Desens secured another assist on the day which was scored in the 52nd minute to take a 4-0 lead. The last two goals were scored by junior Danielle Tazic for her first and second goals of the season. Senior Anna Mixon helped Tazic out on the first goal at the 69-minute mark with the assist and sophomore Zoe Wright collected the assist on the goal in the 77th minute to make the final score 6-0.
Senior Alexa Rabune (5-0-0) and freshman Mackenzie Rath combined for the Mavericks fifth straight shutout to open the 2019 season, making two saves each in the match. The Mavericks outshot the Peacocks by a 28-7 (21-4 on net) margin, while also having a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Minnesota State (5-0-0, 2-0-0 NSIC) will return to The Pitch next weekend to play its first pair of NSIC matches at home for the 2019 season. Minnesota Duluth will be the first to come to Mankato, Minn., on Friday with the match beginning at 3:00 p.m. Then St. Cloud State will take on the Mavericks on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., to finish the weekend.
