Louisville, Ky.--- The Minnesota State (5-1) volleyball team won a pair of matches with a victory over Christian Brothers University (1-3), 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21,15-12) and sweep of Tiffin University (3-3) 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-13), Friday at the Bellarmine Invitational.
In the first set of the game between Minnesota State and Christian Brothers, the teams traded points throughout before the Lady Bucs pulled away late, taking the set 25-22. The Mavericks responded in the second set quickly building a lead on a 5-0 run and were able to hang on to take the second set, tying the match at 1-1.
The third set saw the Lady Bucs open up an early lead and despite a late charge from the mavericks, they were able to hold on to take the set and a 2-1 match lead. Minnesota State left little doubt on the table in the fourth set, quickly racing out to a 14-8 lead that they were once again able to hold to take the set 25-21, tying the match at 2-2 and forcing a deciding fifth set.
After a few back and forth points between the teams, Minnesota State created a 9-6 advantage and thanks to the strength of the front-line play, hang on for the 15-12 win to take the match 3-2.
Morgan Olson led all players with 23 kills while adding four blocks.
Alivia Garbe finished the match with 21 kills, a team leading eight digs, and two blocks as well.
Dana Schindler led the way with 26 assists while
Anissa Janzig finished with six blocks to lead all players.
The second match saw the Mavericks take on the Tiffin University Dragons and quickly jump to a 12-8 lead in the first set thanks to a 4-0 run. The Dragons managed to slow the onslaught, but Minnesota State forced a second timeout by taking a 21-16 lead and eventually took the set 25-17.
In the second set, the Dragons started with a 6-1 run en-route to taking a 16-11 advantage. The Mavericks were able to fight back with a run to cut the Dragon lead to 22-21 forcing a timeout. The run continued for Minnesota State, taking the next four points and the set.
The Mavericks, having completed the big comeback in the second set, completely took over the third set cruising to a 19-9 lead over the Dragons. Minnesota State didn't let Tiffin Get back into and took the set 25-13, winning the match 3-0
Garbe finished the match with a team high 13 kills while
Jessica Nelson finished with nine kills of her own. As a team Minnesota hit at a .283 rate compared to .016 for the dragons and recorded 10 blocks.
Minnesota State will continue tomorrow Louisville, KY., when they take on Virginia State and host Bellarmine University with start times scheduled for 8:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m.
