MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (3-1) will travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Bellarmine Invitational a week after competing in the Barry University Classic. The Mavericks will face four teams from four conferences over the two day span beginning with Christian Brothers at 10:30 a.m., (CST) and Tiffin at 3:30 p.m., (CST) Friday. Minnesota State will wrap up the weekend squaring off with Virginia State at 8:00 a.m., (CST) and host team Bellarmine at 1:00 p.m., (CST) on Saturday.
Mavericks at a Glance: The Mavericks enter the week with a 3-1 (0-0 NSIC) overall record after sweeping American International and Saint Anselm as well as defeating Saint Leo 3-2 before dropping the final match of the weekend 3-0 to Barry University.
Impact Mavericks: Minnesota State is being led on offense by senior outside hitter
Morgan Olson who has recorded 68 kills (4.86/s) while adding 11 blocks. Sophomore setter
Dana Schindler leads the way in assists with 123 (9.46/s). Seniors
Ashton Lee and
Anissa Janzig have recorded 12 and 11 blocks, respectively, on the defensive end.
Scouting Christian Brothers: Christian Brothers is located in Memphis, Tenn., and is a member of the Gulf South Conference (GSC). The Lady Bucs are currently 1-2 on the season. Christian Brothers is coached by In-Sik Hwang who is in his 18th year with the team. As a team this season, Christian Brothers is averaging 10.9 kills per set compared to its opponents 12.0. Additionally, the Lady Bucs compiled 9.5 assists per set and 9.8 digs per frame. Senior Emma Lenoir leads Christian Brothers with 50 kills this season while sophomore Alayna Maslinski has 109 assists. Freshman Maddie Stevens leads the Lady Bucs on defense with 39 digs.
Scouting Tiffin: Tiffin is located in Tiffin, Ohio and is a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC). The Dragons are 2-2 this season.Tiffin is led by head coach Shauna Hruls who is entering her third year with the team. As a team this season, the Dragons posted 13.6 kills per set while their opponents notched 12.3. Tiffin has also totaled 11.9 assists per set and 19.0 digs per set. Senior Jenna Huffman has recorded a team-best 68 kills. Junior Loryn Huffman initiates the offense and has recorded 123 assists this season.
Scouting Virginia State: Virginia State is located in Petersburg, Va., and is a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The Trojans are currently 1-3 on the season. Virginia State is led by third year head coach Amanda Walker. As a team this season, the Hawks average 8.4 kills in comparison to its opponents'9.6. Additionally, Virginia State posts 7.1 assists per set and 14.1 digs per set. Senior Kennadi Cannon leads the Trojans with 29 kills on the season while junior Bria Anderson leads the team with 90 assists.
Scouting Bellarmine: Bellarmine is located in Lousville, Ky., and is a member of the Great Lake Valley Conference (GLVC). The Knights are currently 2-2 on the season. Bellarmine is led by seventh year head coach Jenni Grzebin. As a team this season, the Knights average 12.8 kills in comparison to its opponents' 12.9. Additionally, Bellarmine posts 12.5 assists per set and 16.1 digs per set. The Knights are led on offense by freshman Jayme Scott who has 44 kills on the season. Kristen O'Toole initiates the offense for Bellarmine and has recorded 134 assists this season.
Looking Ahead: Minnesota State will begin Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play next weekend with a Friday night match at Bemidji State set to begin at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, the Mavericks will travel to face off with Minnesota Crookston at 2:00 p.m.
