Sioux Falls, S.D. --- Minnesota State could not hold on to a early 5-0 lead, eventually falling to Oklahoma Baptist 8-5 in its second game of the 2019 NCAA Division II Central Region tournament.
With the loss, the Mavericks are eliminated from the double-elimination tournament.
Friday's action at the four-team regional was plagued by rain with Minnesota State's game vs. Oklahoma Baptist, which was originally pegged for a 2:30 p.m. start, not getting underway until 5:30 p.m.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the game when
Teddy Petersen's single to left field scored
Tom Imholte and
Nick Altermatt in the top of the first inning. A triple by
Cam Kline in the top of the third scored Teddy Peterson and
Jordan Hart then Kline scored on a double to right center by
Carter Elliott.
The Bison struck for three runs in the bottom of the third, touching up Minnesota State starting pitcher
Jon Ludwig for three runs on four hits. It became a one-run game in the bottom of the fifth after Baptist cobbled together single, a stolen base and a single to score a run. And after the bottom of the sixth, in which OBU scored four times on five hits, the Mavericks trailed 8-5.
OBU was able to quiet the Minnesota State bats in the final three innings in claiming the 8-5 win.
Imholte had four hits in five trips to the plate in the game and Teddy Peterson finished with three hits in five at bats.
The two teams combined for 24 hits in the contest, with OBU outhitting the Mavericks by a 14-10 margin.
Ludwig, who went 5.1 innings and gave up ten hits and seven earned runs, took the loss and finishes the year with a 6-1 record.
The Mavericks, who were making their 37th NCAA tournament appearance, complete the year with a 39-15 overall mark.
