St. Cloud, Minn. --- A pair of losses Friday sealed Minnesota State's fate at the 2019 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Tournament being contested in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Mavericks, who opened the tournament with a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over Northern State Thursday, dropped a 12-4 decision to St. Cloud State and absorbed a 4-1 loss to Winona State Friday and with the two losses, were eliminated from the tournament.
St. Cloud State took a 2-0 lead through the first two innings of the first game before Minnesota State responded with a run in the bottom of the third and a
Ty Buck home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. The Huskies retook the lead with a run in the top of the fifth, but RBI singles from
Ty Denzer and
Tory Miller in the bottom of the sixth made it a 4-3 Maverick lead. SCSU broke the game open with four runs in the seventh and capped it off with a five-run ninth. Buck finished the game with a three-for-five performance that included a pair of runs and
Tyler Berg was two-for-two. Head coach
Matt Magers used five pitchers in the contest and
Hunter Even, who relieved starter
Jon Ludwig, who went the first five innings
, took the loss.
The second game today was similar to the first one in that the Mavericks fell behind early with Winona State jumping out to a 2-0 lead after three innings of action. Minnesota State pulled within one run in the bottom of the sixth when
Nick Altermatt singled to drive in
Cam Kline, but the Warriors added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring in the contest.
Jimmy Larson, who went eight innings, struck out 13 batters and walked three while scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs. With the loss, Larson stands 6-4 for the year. Altermatt went two-for-three with a walk in the contest.
The Mavericks, who stand 39-13 for the season, will find out their postseason fate
when the NCAA Division II Baseball Selection show airs at NCAA.com Sunday, May 12 at 9 p.m. CST.
