Wayne, Neb. --- Minnesota State continued conference play with a pair of wins, 3-1 and 6-1, against Wayne State Sunday afternoon in Wayne, Neb.
With the results, the Mavericks move to 20-14 on the season and 5-7 in conference play while the Wildcats move to 9-20, 0-12 in the NSIC
Game 1
Mackenzie Ward (10-9) started the game and earned the win pitching the complete seven innings allowing only one run on six hits and striking out six. Makenna Adkison (6-8) started for the Wildcats and pitched all six innings to take the loss after allowing three runs on five walks and six hits.
Minnesota State was first to score in the second inning when
Haylee Bridges took a bases loaded walk to score Hanna Hastings. After a fielder's choice out at home,
Kayla Moky singled up the center to bring home
Emma Schifferle and
Bridges to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Wildcats got a run back on a homerun to right field, but that would finalize scoring on the day to give Minnesota State the 3-1 win.
Moky finished the 2-2 from the plate with two RBI and a pair of walks.
Cori Kennedy went 2-3 on the day and Bridges finished 1-2 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.
Game 2
Lexi Schoper (4-2) started the game for Minnesota State and allowed one run and six hits in six innings of work, earning the win.
Caitlin Stone pitched the final inning allowing zero baserunners. Riley Vanderveen (0-4) started for the Wildcats but was chased in the second inning after the Mavericks scored four runs, taking the loss.
In the second inning, Minnesota State got on a roll when
Carly Esselman singled up the middle to score Kennedy and Hannah Hastings before
Courtney Potter drilled another single that scored
McKenzie Paap and
Esselman.
The Wildcats scored a run in the fourth inning, but the Mavericks responded in the bottom of the inning when
Esselman scored on a wild pitch. The last run came in the sixth inning when
Potter drove home
Esselman on a sacrifice fly, to give Minnesota State the 6-1 win.
Esselman went 1-3 from the plate but hit in two runs and scored three runs in the game.
Bridges went 2-3 while
Kennedy went 1-3 with a run scored.
Minnesota State will travel to Marshall, Minn., Wednesday for a doubleheader with the Mustangs before traveling to Duluth, Minn., and St. Cloud, Minn., Saturday and Sunday for doubleheaders with the Bulldogs and Huskies.
