Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State drops game three to Wayne State by a score of 9-5 on Saturday at Bowyer Field.
Minnesota State (29-9, 20-6 NSIC) had its 11 games winning streak snapped, but did take two out of three in the series against Wayne State.
For the second consecutive game, the Wildcats took a 3-0 lead after the first half inning of play over the Mavericks. Senior third baseman
Kyle Thompson brought in sophomore right fielder
Alex Logelin on an one out single to left field. Sophomore designated hitter
Andrew Hanson then tripled down the left field line to bring around Thompson to score with two outs. Junior second baseman
Peyton Barnes singled in the next at bat that allowed Hanson to score the third run of the inning.
Wayne State scored three more runs in the top of the third inning to extend its lead to 6-0. A hit by pitch, single and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with no outs for WSC. Barnes brought in one on a single to right field, Senior center fielder
Travis Miller was hit by a pitch to force in the second run and junior catcher
Jake Lemar capped the inning off with another RBI single.
The score became 7-0 in the top of the fourth inning as junior first baseman
Bryce Bisenius and Hanson hit back-to-back two out doubles for the run.
Minnesota State finally had an answer in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two runs to cut into the deficit. Senior catcher
Tom Imholte singled with one out and then senior right fielder
Jordan Hart brought Imholte around to score on an RBI triple with two outs. Junior first baseman
Ty Buck was able to drive in Hart on a single for the second run of the inning.
The Mavericks made it a two-run game in the bottom of the sixth inning after scoring three runs to cut the score to 7-5. A hit by pitch, an error and a single by freshman shortstop
Nick Altermatt loaded the bases with one out. Hart reached on a fielder's choice as a run was brought home, but Altermatt was out at second base. Buck hit a single back up the middle for his second RBI of the day and junior second baseman
Teddy Petersen followed with an RBI single of his own.
The Wildcats got two runs back in the top of the seventh inning and were the last two runs scored in the game to make the final score 9-5. Bisenius doubled to open the inning and Barnes doubled with one out to bring Bisenius to score. Lemar brought in the final run with a single to center field that brought Barnes in to score.
Hart and Buck led the way offensively for the Mavericks with two hits and two RBI a piece.
Freshman right-hander
Cade Harrmann (4-0) earned the win after going four and two-thirds innings, allowed two runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Junior right-hander
Lawson Zenner pitched an inning in relief and gave up three unearned runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout. Freshman left-hander
Andrew Staebell went two scoreless innings in relief and allowed two hits and a walk, while striking out one. Senior right-hander
Charles Hasty finished the game for the Wildcats and struck out three Maverick batters.
Freshman right-hander
Jack Zigan (3-2) did not make it out of the first inning in the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits and recording two outs. Junior right-hander
Hunter Even pitched an inning and a third in relief and allowed three runs on three hit with two strikeouts. Freshman right-hander
Collin Denk pitched an inning and allowed one hit. Sophomore right-hander
Trevor Divinski went the next three and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Senior right-hander
Bobby Gauvreau got the final out in the seventh inning for the Mavericks. Freshmen right-handers
Kyle Nordby and
Zach Gustafson pitched the final scoreless two innings.
Minnesota State will hit the road and head to Sioux Falls, S.D., to face Augustana on Wednesday, April 24. The doubleheader will begin at 4:00 p.m., with the second game starting around 6:00 p.m.
