Auburndale, Fla. --- Minnesota State rolls past West Virginia Wesleyan 11-4 in the seventh game of the Florida trip Thursday morning.
The Mavericks (8-2) controlled from start to finished over the Bobcats (3-8) with a series of runs by MSU scoring the first six, WVWC scoring the next four and MSU scoring the final five runs.
Minnesota State scored five of their first six runs in the top of the third inning to take hold of the lead. Junior third baseman
Tory Miller began the inning with a walk and then junior second baseman
Teddy Petersen put down a sacrifice bunt to move Miller to second base. Senior catcher
Tom Imholte then singled, driving in Miller and advanced to second on the throw. After Imholte stole third base, junior first baseman
Ty Buck hit an infield single that scored Imhote. Senior right fielder
Jordan Hart continued his hot start to the season with a two-run home run to give MSU a 4-0 lead. That home run broke the all-time record for the Mavericks, passing Josh Smith who previously had 29. Back-to-back doubles by freshman designated hitter
Elliott Carter and junior left fielder
Ty Denzer scored the fifth run of the inning.
The Mavericks put up one more run in the top of the fifth inning as freshman shortstop
Nick Altermatt scored on a Denzer strikeout. The Bobcats tried to throw behind Elliott at first base to pick him off and as Elliott was advancing to second, the first baseman threw the ball away allowing Altermatt to score.
West Virginia Wesleyan answered in the bottom of the fifth inning with one run as senior right fielder
Johnathan Cintron scored after an error on a Maverick pick-off attempt.
The Bobcats scored their other three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning starting with junior first baseman
Sam Ross singling and scoring senior pinch hitter
Dominic Castillo. Then, junior catcher
Ben Fulks reached on a fielder's choice as the play was made at second base and Ross scored after the Mavericks made a throwing error on the back end of the double play attempt. Sophomore pinch hitter
Nick Grotti then singled and brought in Fulks to make the score 6-4.
That was as close as it got as the Mavericks went on to score a run in the seventh, two runs in the eighth and two runs in the ninth innings. Junior pinch hitter
Jack Mattson roped a two-out double to keep the top of the seventh inning alive and Denzer came through with an RBI single to score Mattson.
In the eighth inning, Buck and Hart each hit one-out singles to put runners at first and third. After a strike out, Hart stole second and Mattson walked to bring up Denzer. Denzer's single brought in Buck and Hart scored on an error by the Bobcats.
Freshman second baseman
Mitch Frederick reached on an error to open the top of the ninth inning and Imholte doubled to put runners on second and third. A wild pitched allowed Imholte to move up to third and Frederick to score. Buck then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Imholte for the final run of the game.
Denzer and Imholte led the way for the Mavericks with three hits apiece and Denzer added three RBIs. Buck and Hart also had a multi-hit game with two RBIs each with Hart becoming the new all-time home run leader at Minnesota State with 30, five of which have been hit this season.
Sophomore right-hander
Cam Kline (2-0) started for the Mavericks and earned his second win of the season after going five and two-thirds innings. Kline surrendered for runs, two earned runs, on four hits and two walks, while adding eight strikeouts.
Freshman right-hander
Zach Gustafson relieved Kline in the fifth inning and walked the first batter he faced, but got the one out to end the inning. Senior right-hander
Bobby Gauvreau started in the seventh inning and pitched the next two innings, allowing two walks and striking out two in the scoreless frames. Freshman right-hander
Jack Brown made his Maverick debut and finished the game with a clean inning with one walk and strikeout each.
Senior
Jake Bishop (1-2) was handed the loss for the Bobcats after giving six runs, five earned runs, on six hits in five innings of work. Bishop walked five Maverick batters, while only striking out one. Junior
Julio Medina relieved Bishop and went two and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs, two earned runs, on six hits and three walks, while striking out four. Sophomore
David McLeod finished the game for WVWC and gave up two runs, one earned run, on one hit with one strikeout in an inning and a third of work.
Minnesota State wrap up its Florida trip against Ashland tomorrow starting at 6:30 p.m., EST in Kissimmee, Fla.
