Mavericks Drop NSIC Opening Series With Golden Bears

St. Paul, Minn. --- Minnesota State opened NSIC play with a pair of losses against Concordia St. Paul Wednesday afternoon.

With the results, the Mavericks move to 15-9 on the season and 0-2 in conference play the Golden Bears move to 15-7, 2-0 in the NSIC

Game 1
Mackenzie Ward (7-7) started the game and took the loss while pitching a complete game with 13 strikeouts but allowed four runs.  Aryka Knoche (6-2) picked up the win for Concordia-St. Paul allowing three runs in seven innings.

The Golden Bears quickly got on the board, scoring a run in the first inning but were held off the board until the fifth.  In the fifth sixth and seventh innings though, Concordia-St. Paul extended its lead by a run, taking a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

The Mavericks offense awakened in bottom of the seventh when Torey Richards drilled a two-run homer to right center to cut the lead to 4-2. Before Courtney Potter hit Julia Bastian in with two outs to make it a one run game.  The comeback would come up short though when Carly Esselman grounded out to third base, giving the golden Bears the 4-3 win.

Richards went 1-3 on the day with the two-run homer while Bastian went 2-3 with a run scored.   Potter also went 2-3 with an RBI while McKenzie Paap went 2-4.

Game 2
Caitlin Stone (1-1) started the game for Minnesota State and allowed four runs in six innings, taking the loss.  Lexi Schoper pitched an inning in relief allowing zero hits.  Samantha Sullivan (7-3) started the game for Concordia-St. Paul and went the distance, allowing seven hits and no runs to earn the win.

Defense was the name of the game until the Golden Bears broke the game open with two runs in the fifth before adding a pair of runs in the seventh.  The Maverick offense struggled to get into scoring position and weren't able to get a run across the plate, resulting in a 4-0 win for Concordia-St. Paul.

Richards went 2-3 in the game while Potter and Paap each went 2-4.

Minnesota State will travel to North Dakota for doubleheaders with the University of Mary and Minot State, Saturday and Sunday.
