Kissimmee, Fla. --- Minnesota State routs Walsh (Ohio) 10-1 in the second game of the Florida trip Saturday night.
The Mavericks (4-1) scored 10 runs in the first five innings over the Cavaliers (1-4) in their second straight win. Senior catcher
Tom Imholte and freshman shortstop
Nick Altermatt led the way for MSU, collecting three hits each.
In the first inning, Imholte and junior designated hitter
Ty Buck both singled with one out before freshman first baseman
Carter Elliott collected a two RBI single.
The Mavericks scored five runs in the second inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Imholte started the scoring with an RBI single, plating senior left fielder
Tyler Berg. Senior right fielder
Jordan Hart then drew a bases loaded walk that brought home junior second baseman
Teddy Petersen. Elliot followed with a sacrifice fly to center field with Imholte tagging up and scoring. Altermatt finished the inning with a two RBI single that brought around Hart and Buck.
The Cavaliers were able to get a run back in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore left fielder
Alec Debruler singled with junior first baseman
Andrew Czech scoring the only WU run of the game. MSU answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when sophomore center fielder
Jack Waletich hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Buck.
Minnesota State added its final two runs in the fifth beginning with a double steal by Imholte and senior third baseman
Tory Miller. Imholte broke for second and got enough of the Cavalier's attention for Miller to score from third base. In the same at bat, Hart singled that brought home Imholte from second base.
Sophomore right-hander
Cam Kline worked that first six innings for the Mavericks, giving up one run on four hits, while striking out seven batters and walking three.
Right-handers
Collin Denk (freshman),
Jack Rasmussen (junior) and
Kyle Nordby (freshman) worked the last three innings for the Mavericks. Denk gave up two hits and struck out one hitter, Rasmussen induced two flyouts and a groundout and Nordby (who made his Maverick debut) struck out one and walked one in a clean ninth inning.
Hart was the only other Maverick to have a multi-hit game with two singles.
Kline (2-0) picked up the win for the Mavericks, while junior right-hander
Hyatt Shenefield (0-2) was handed the loss for the Cavaliers. Shenefield gave up seven runs on three hits, while issuing one walk and striking out one in an inning and two-thirds of work.
Minnesota State (4-1) will face Grand Valley State tomorrow starting at 1:45 p.m., EST in Auburndale, Fla.
