Bemidji, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team (11-11, 8-10 NSIC) defeated the Bemidji State Beavers (6-17, 3-15 NSIC) 75-64 Saturday afternoon in Bemidji, Minn. This is the fourth straight win for Minnesota State, and the teams sixth win in the last seven games.
In the first quarter the Mavericks set the tone by scoring on their first three possessions of the game and forcing the Beavers to keep up with that pace. Bemidji State made a couple of late in the shot clock three-pointers to keep the game close, but Minnesota State took a 22-16 lead into the second quarter.
Coming out of the huddle, the Mavericks immediately went on a 7-1 run which gave them a 12-point lead with 7:46 to go in the second quarter, prompting a Bemidji State timeout. Minnesota State continued to build its lead, only allowing eight points in the quarter, and took a 45-24 lead into the half.
Monica Muth led the Mavericks with 11 points in the half while
Taylor Drost added ten. As a team, Minnesota State shot 51% from the field compared to 40% and stole the ball seven times.
In the second half the Beavers could never fully mount any kind of comeback and the Mavericks kept the gap around twenty points until the final minutes, ultimately winning the game 75-64.
Muth finished the game as the scoring leader for the Mavericks with 14-points while adding five rebounds.
Brooke Tonsfeldt and
Tayla Stuttley each added 12-points.
As a team the Mavericks shot 44.4% from the field and 40% from three-point range while forcing the Beavers to commit 16 turnovers. Minnesota State also held a 37-32 edge on the glass.
The Mavericks will return home for the final regular season home games as they host Augustana Friday, at 5:30 p.m., before taking on Wayne State Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
